View Full Version : My discovery on painting weights.

I've been playing with the weight tools and I was having trouble when painting weights with the smooth setting. Well I discovered some settings that seem to help. When you want to smooth the transition between 2 joints in the weight tool, go to the joints tab and select the 2 joints that you want to smooth between. Then go to the painting tab and set the radius you want. Then I crank step all the way to 100. Then I set the falloff to dome or bell. Make sure that auto normalize is checked. I then put the joints in a deformed state so that I can see where the transition needs correcting. If things are really bumpy, you may want to uncheck the visible only box. When I have hypernurbs on, I can't see the weights but I can still paint "blind". This may be helpful to see in some cases. Now I seem to get results comparable to XSI and I am a very happy camper. I think my main problem before was not understanding the step and falloff settings. I'm still a little confused about selecting 1 joint versus selecting 2 part. Does anyone have any observations on this?

sounds like it makes sense, although I haven't tried it and I haven't done much with characters nor do I have R10.

How do you lkike the new mocca tools? are they much better then before?

Cheers,

Tom

definitely muchmuch better, though they require some gettin used to--

Your workflow is actually the same I used--
I also have to get used to the new settings--
Weighttool offers a lot of settings, but it is not always obvious how they affect each other--

When using the tablet I found the following settings works well for smoothing:
1. Options->Strength 25%
2. Painting->Step 200
3. Painting->Falloff Dome
4. Painting->Width 38%
5. Painting->Pressure "Strength"

whiel on the subject I'll warnt hat when painting absolute, I highly recommend NOT using any falloff (not even hard, only none) this is because no matter what falloff you use, the edges falloff to 0 which means you can actaully remove weight form points event hough you are painting with 100%
