I am new to XSI v2.0 not the v3exp. And was wondering -

What is the difference between Softimage|XSI and Softimage|3D? According to their website - "SOFTIMAGE|3D is Softimage’s
legendary 3-D character animation product..." so is it only for character animation???

From what I could get out of this thread about XSI - http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=41860 - it seems to just be a less sophisticated version of XSI.

Thank you all in advanced for your replies.

Hi,

In a very short term:
Like the name says XSI
X=Xtra and SI=Softimage
So XSI is a much more complete package them the SI3D
You also can see that by the diference in the price SI3D starts at 1,495 USD and XSI is way above from that.
But there are plenty of diferences in how both application work.

See Ya!

Thank you for the replies all. Especially EdHarris for that link. That was exactly what I was looking for. A good overview of the capabilities and drawbacks of each program, thank you again.
