View Full Version : Glass shader in Maya

Can Maya with MRay do glass like Brazil? You know utmost realistically? I have spent 72 hours trying to make one with all sorts of nodes and utility nodes to no avail (starting to doubt if Maya can achieve it).

I have seen various glass shaders but even with caustics on and tons of tweaking there is no way anyone would be fooled by it.

If anyone can shed some insight on this and maybe some pics of realistic glass done in Maya/MRay I would be grateful.

Thnaks.

?

even maya and mental-ray have their limits

ahhh - seriously - where are you stuck at ? maybe post some of your results - AFAIR there's a glass shader on AW's site

Well, the shader on AW site is very outdated and takes some serious tweaks to get to work with caustics.

Here are two example of that glass shader and I made one slightly better but nowhere near the quality of Brazil (one I accidently made looked like the t1000 in Terminator2 which is not what I was after).

Glass1 - Normal Light after major tweaks (http://Mysticglow.com/glass.jpg)

Glass2 - Slightly brighter Light after major tweaks (http://Mysticglow.com/glass2.jpg)

Neither one looks like Brazil or anywheres near the quality (in subsquent renderings I played with reflectivity and it looked better but quality was still yuck).

do you have a sample of a brazil rendered glass?

Not anymore but if I remember right glass is done on their website in the gallery and then there is Final render.

your scene looks very basic - is this your reference?

glass "lives" by it's environment (lighting, reflected environment, ...)

maybe this tutorial can give you some inspiration - http://www.liquid-arts.de/tech/JD/JD-05.htm

Thats not my scene thats from the AW tutorial site and all I did was try and make the glass look real. AW failed and so did I.

Thanks for the link but I was unable to correlate LW stuff over to Maya so I am back to pretty much where I was. Seems in LW its a very easy task to make glass.

Thank you for the help though.

with read my post i was refering to my comment on the environment - you can't expect glass to look "real" if the environment is a checkered plane and some poorly tuned lights

even the default scene from AW's HOWTO does look better than your tweaked scene - where have the shadows gone?

i'll post a tweaked scene if this will help you

Yes, please post.

As for shadows and stuff the only thing I tweaked was the glass shader and turned on caustics on one light and I touched nothing else.

Anyone else able to do good glass in Maya?
