View Full Version : LG DVD writers not working...
alvin-cgi 12-04-2006, 02:30 PM I am just about this close to "finish" my first DIY computer, but things isn't going as planned...
1st was cpu temperature, then audio now dvd rom... well at lease the audio is working now, cpu seem cool enough, now is DVD writers... so can someone fullfil my dream, before I have to call tech guy...:)
I have installed 2 DVD writers, both LG
1) HL-DT-ST DVDRAM-GSA-4167B SCSI CdRom
2) HL-DT-ST DVDRAM-GSA-H12N SCSI CdRom
It was fine when I first installed, but now both are dissappered in My Computer...
Under Device Magnager OS still see both devices there, and properties and drivers all said working properly, but just not show out in My Computer?
I have tried boot from these drives and it works, but agains not working in Windows... I have tried download new drivers, but still not work!!!
I am using XP64, C2C, P5B deluxe, 4GB ram...
Any one have any ideas, please helps...:)

Can Windows see the drive if only one is hooked up at a time?
How are the DVD drives physically connected to the mobo? Do they share the same cable? If so, try separating them, i.e. have one on the same cable as a HDD if possible. Also, ensure you have jumpers properly set to Master or Slave.
If you manage to get your drives going after reading this my rate is only half of what the tech guy would have charged you. ;)
[Edit} After hitting the Submit Reply button I noticed your drives are SCSI. Could be a little more to it than what I described. Might be some SCSI issue with mobo BIOS or XP.
SCSI? Really?
For now I'm going to assume they're not SCSI.. :P
Most modern motherboards come with one IDE port. Hard drives are normally connected via SATA (II) and the CD drives connect to the IDE port. Each IDE port is capable of 2 devices. However if you place two devices on the IDE port, either both drives need to be set to cable select (via jumper) or one needs to be master and the other needs to be slave.
If they really are SCSI, then this is a different story :)

Thanks for your times...:)

Under Devices Manager, yes both comes out fine.(pictured next post)

Through IDE cable, shared same IDE cable. jumpers set to Master and Slave, yup.
"have one on the same cable as a HDD if possible."
Cant do that, because it is not SATA...

It is not SCSI but IDE, I have no idea why it shows SCSI in Devices Manager??
Thanks:)

Hi Lots, once again, Thank you very much:scream:
SCSI? Really?
No, it's IDE, no idea why it shows SCSI in Device Mahager...(pictured)

Thats what I understand how it suppose to be...
CD drives are connected to IDE port and I have trid dirrerence jumper setting(master or slave) but still nothing happen...
I dont understand why it somehow dissappered, I means may be because XP64 drives issues???

Its not SCSI, so perhaps it is setting(either windows or bios) can fix...
I have attached an image of Device Manager screen, see anything unusal...
Thanks:)
You're probably fine on that front then. Device manager sometimes reports things like this. Try connecting just one drive at a time to see if that helps any.
If just one drive still doesnt work, right click on the drive in device manager and click update driver to see if anything new pops up. If nothing, you could always try uninstalling the driver and rebooting. A few computers at work have had an issue where the CD drive disappears.. removing the driver and letting windows redetect it seems to do a good job on these machines.

Both drives are not working, either update or uninstall, after reboot still the same. Windows are actually pickup the both DVD drives and shows in Device Manager but nothing appear on My Computer.
Thanks:)

As said before, check the jumpers and make sure there's no conflict (master/slave; one can be master, the other has to be slave. Unless your mb has two IDE ports, in which case you'd be better off using both, and setting both devices as masters - one primary, the other secondary). Check all the cables, and check whether or not BIOS sees the drives.
Installing DVD drives is ordinarily a pretty straightforward process - plug'n'play which, amazingly, worked every time for me :)
As for the drives themselves, I had an LG's DVD reader and a DVD-RW, and my experience is that I'm never buying LG again. Hope you have better luck. I am, however, slightly puzzled as to why you'd want two DVD/RWs, as you most likely won't be burning two DVDs at a time - getting an ordinary DVD reader and one DVD/RW seems to be a more logical combination to me...

I have done all thing above you said, still the same problem...

Buying new drives may be a tad extreme in your situation. Since there's two of them not working, I find it unlikely that both are broken - could be defective cables, or something with the IDE controller on the mb, or even something messed up in windows.
Have you tried checking the disk management? (Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management, on the tree to the left of the windows select "Disk Management")
At any rate, getting the entire system checked up at some computer service store might be a better idea then replacing the drives, which are probably in good working order. Since you assembled yourself, you'll have to pay for it, but the price shouldn't be very high - certainly lower then buying new drives.

I've seen this before. Its an IDE driver issue when the motherboard is using a different controller to assign additional IDE ports.
Check to see if there is an additional chipset update for the system under XP64 drivers which includes updated IDE drivers, and/or drivers for the additional hardware IDE port controller.
The problem isn't really with LG at all, but the motherboard drivers, and the fact you're running XP64. You'd probably have no issue whatsoever with a XP32 setup, as the drivers for most hardware are far more mature under that platform.
I'd suggest tracking down the drivers first, or possibly completely disabling the second IDE controller and running everything off the standard ports.

:scream: THANKS MY FRIENDS FOR ALL YOUR HELPS! :applause:
Problem solved!! Yes, I can see those drives now and play cd dvd whatever, I am much much happier now… YEEEEHAAAAAAA.:buttrock:
It is not motherboard, DVD writers, drivers, bios or OS; it is ALL caused by Adobe Production Studio premium!
What I did was restored back from earlier stage, before any softwares install, than I re-install each software and check and check and check… after reboot from installed APS – BOOM!!, those DVD drives goes missing, I search around Adobe user forums and found out there are others also having have same (100%) errors as me, even using same LG DVD writer!
Luckily there is solution– changes a few Registry setting and all done, only took me about 20 min vs 3 long days and late-nights and got nothing fix… well “thanks” Adobe.
OK, machine “IS” fixed, I can close this chapter now… (Hopes nothing else happens):D
But still have to thank you for all your guys great helps, thank you very very much!!:scream:
Thanks Lots, Greg, nighttrain, Signal2Noise...
So, here is the solution for whoever installs APS and missing DVD/CD writers…
1.) Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CURRENTCONTROLSET/CONTROL/CLASS/ {4D36E965-E325.../LowerFilters) There are two values for lower filters. Remove the pxhelp20 entry so only pxhelp64 remains.
2.) Completely delete the HighFilters key as it is not used in x64.
As soon as these steps were complete my drives reappeared. Didn't even require a reboot.

Oops, another problem I have just realize, now I can play music through computer but that means I need a new set of speakers... more $$:D :D
