View Full Version : would an eyeball character work?
jigsawe 12-04-2006, 10:06 AM hello
im thinking of a short film and the main character would be an eyeball. its gonna be an eye with legs and arms and a mouth. (without any eye expressions). i was wondering if it would be able to show all the emotions clearly, if it would work as a main character, and if i had two eyeballs if i would be able to clearly distinguish a male and a female eye.

Have you watched the film Monster Inc from Pixar? If you havent, do watch it, its a fantastic show. That aside, the movie have very good reference for a one eyed monster, namely, Mike Wazowski. That should give you all the reference you need, take a look here http://www.pixar.com/featurefilms/inc/chars_pop2.html

yes, i have seen the film, i think more than 50 times. im a huge pixar nut.
the difference is that Mike has an eye socket and eyebrow to show emotion with the eye. The eye alone shows a lot of different things. my character wouldnt have that.
i was doodling the other day and i realized that if you have one mouthshape and add different eyes to the face you can have so many different expressions.

hi jigsawe.
you´ve to give your character soul, history and background. there must be a reason why he looks like he looks. design follows function with clear consequences (dis-/advantages).
have a look to ed hooks "acting for animators" and test your char in animation - what is he able to do and what not.
so far...nice day and have fun

You could use the pupil as the "face" and the iris could be used to emote.

even for a lidless orb, there's a lot you can do just by squishing, stretching, moving and bouncing the pupil around to help your character emote.
