What is the easiest way to get a c4d model into Maya?

FBX exporter, it'll even keep the hierarchy intact for you. Just mind the scale in the export options in C4D's prefs.
That or you could use the obj exporter riptide http://www.skinprops.com./download.php

I'll give riptide a try, thanks for the link.
I tried exporting it as fbx before but Maya (free learning edition btw) didn't recognize the file type. Is fbx exporter a plugin, or where can I find it?

Yeah, working with the PLE (free learning edition) is going to limit you immensely... I believe the PLE only imports/recognizes maya binary (.mb) and maya ascii (.ma) besides it's own proprietary format.
