View Full Version : Misc : Best modeling app?
jadedchron 02-13-2003, 12:59 PM I was just wondering what the community's thoughts are on the best modeling application out there. do you think max holds it's own in the modeling dept. or will in the future?

When it comes to modeling I prefer to use Rhino.
Howdy !
well, being an Sub-d adept, i'd say Nendo and Mirai look to have the best modeling tools out there : )
(shame they're not developped anymore !)

This is actually hard to answer now. They all have strengths...I think it's now a matter of preference. I find Max's strength in architectural stuff and LW in organic. The best?.....If I had one software to pick and ended up on an island I would pick Maya - Nurbs, Poly, splines and sub-d's are all featured - just a preference..not absolute.
Ed--
i used to think it was all the aforementioned programs but someone posted this link for cinema 4d sub-d tool it has its... i nearly crapped my dungerees...http://www.maxoncomputer.com/movies/modeling.mov .....i want cinema 4d for modeling now

This isn't a "what 3d app should I use". It's a specific question about which application is best at modeling. I think you would get a more objective answer if you posted in the Modeling forum though, changed the question to "Best SubD modeling App" and added XSI, Wings, Nendo, Mirai and Houdini and removed Rhino.

In fact this is like asking what car is the most beautifull !!
They all have pros and cons ! !
You'll develop you're skills based in the tools they give you ! if you're happy or not with them... well is up to you to go to the app that will make you happy on modeling !
Max for me is not a standart in modeling ! it was his tool ! like the others !! maya has whis on tools ! makes him a god app !!
nendo and mirai are pretty cool !!
other app could have a look on it !

I would've posted it in the modeling forum except I wanted to know from the max users what they thought was the best modeling app. as i've noticed alot of people modeling outside of max and then bringing it in. this is by far no where near that thread dvornik. anyway can't believe i forgot xsi and wings 3d ;\ guess they'll have to be Other

I'd like to put in my $.02 for Max, and also, as a former Nendo user, wings3d.
If you liked nendo, wings3d is a freeware "copy" of the program, with many, many enhancements. You know, like unlimited undos, virtual mirroring, etc. Basically, the dude who is creating the software is trying to combine Nendo and Mirai into one compact modeling tool.
It's stable, and intuitive. Probably the one of the most powerful sub-d modelers out there.
www.wings3d.com
Also, it's only 1.8MB, and of course, you can't beat the price...$0.00
As far as which is "best", i'd say they all have their strengths and weakneses. Maya, LW, Max, RHINO,XSI...whatever you are comfortable with. Max does'nt do NURBS well(if at all), but it's poly modeler is now becoming one of the best. I just use max because that's what I've been using for years. I say, if a better modeler comes along that is affordable and will fit into my production pipeline, I'll buy it.
Just my opinion, which really ain't worth the electrons displaying it.

i think i got an idea what the outcome of this poll will be
and the best modelapp is the one you love to work with its individual i think

Since this post is in the 3dsmax section I'd expect the response to be biased towards Max.

I'm with Dvornik on this 1, this is just a waste of space. To truly make an assesment someone would have to be fluent in every app mentioned. Most people have tried some of these, but how many could truly rate them without being biased on the workflow and environment. Whatever gets the job done quickly, and effectively for the individual is the best modeling app.

IMO, the best modeling app hasn't been created yet!
once i read about an app that works along with sensitive gloves and you model some kind of virtual "clay", that would be the best modeling app : )

Actually there is a forced feedback/resistance system that pretty much works this way. You have a pen affixed to a servo controlled arm that becomes rigid when the pen is touching the virtual model. You view the model with VR gogs. The systems are around 10-15k I think and I have seen some nice models from them but the resulting meshes are very dense and have to be cleaned up for use in production. It almost makes mroe sense to just modle in clay and then scan the clay model or use a digitzer pen and manually create a mesh.
The same technology is used for virtual remote surgery systems. Actually medical purposes are probably what intially funded the dev of such tools.

that's the FreeForm system by SensAble. 15-24k, depending on the package. used with a regular monitor, no VR goggles. it's pretty impressive to watch it being used in the hands of a skilled artist.

Having used 3ds from v1-dos till v3.1-max, lightwave from v4, formZ from v2.9 and rhino for some months:
Lightwave's modeller for organic mod,
FormZ for fast and detailed design and architectural mod,
Max for parametric mod. with histories,
Rhino for Nurbs mod....
So you see, it kinda depends on your projects...

oh well, Iam a Max user but Iam trying Maya and not 100% satisfied (but nurbs rocks) and what the hell, the new Max 5 polygons really rocks my day every day! the cursor snaping on over the vertex and the edge is perfect, and the line that show where the cut is going to is genious, for polygonal modelling my vote go to Max couldn't try Rhino or XSI anyway :)
Solidworks!
Not many(if any) apps can beat that what comes to pure modeling... apart from organic stuff.

I vote for Wings3D! Having seen MAX, Maya, XSI, Cinema4D, Rhino and Lightwave...i prefer the freeware Wings3D. Incredible but true...there is NO 3d program out now that has the same speedy modeling workflow for polygon modeling (i'm not talking about nurbs). It all makes sense.
All you guys (and girls) should really try it! I havent' seen anything coming remotely close to it in terms of speed of workflow!

XSI has some of my favorite poly tools, though I think Wings is damn close. I use Max for work. I think in Max, so it works the best for bill paying, but I like the flow of those two applications also.

XSI is a very good second for me as well. One thing that i really hate about MAX is it's selectionsystem. If that would improve, i would like it a lot better.

ave you tried the polygonal tools of 3dsmax 5?

I think wings is better for organic poly modeling than max (XSI too for that matter) - but Max has taken some great steps in that regard.

Hi Russo,
Yes i've tried the polygon tools of MAX 5 and, although much better than before, still a lot of clicks for getting into the proper mode, changing it to an editable poly, collapsing the stack, selecting the polygons by clicking them one by one with the ctrl-button. Always having to disable 'affect back faces' (is there a shortcut or easy script for that?).
If i want to start polygon-modeling from scratch, still a lot of clicking and selecting. I guess it has a lot to do with MAX being so versatile....editable poly's is only one out of a lot of options. I guess in the end one could customize MAX in such a way that it is almost as flexible as Wings3D, but that would require some major customizing.
