View Full Version : Rigging Woes - Max 5

I've rigged a few of my characters, mostly for posing and not for animation. I tried to do this for the first time in Max 5 tonight. The core of the problem is that the vertices dont seem to want to attach to the bones. After making a whole skeleton and carefully assigning each and every vertex to the appropriate bone, all of 6 of the verts move with it. They happen to move with the very last bone I made, but its still not all of the vertices that should move with that last bone.

I used skin and a bones skeleton, I did all the adding and subtracting of vertices through the 'paint weights' option. Even now I can go through looking at the envelopes and see the vertices light up different colors suggesting they're properly attached, yet still, I move the bones and nothing follows. I've posted the max file here if anyone needs to look at it.

I've modeled Jimmy Page with his vintage guitar :airguitar , he simply MUST be shredding on it, not standing in the dissected frog pose.

max file: www.3dchisel.com/extras/saveJimmy.max (I think you have to 'save target as')

Ill be posting him on the Game Art forum as soon as I get this posing mess handled.

i'd suggest reading (or rereading) the joan of arc bones section.

I don't know how its done in the "Joan of Arc" tutorial (it kinda bored me enough...everyone's modelling Joan of Arc...animating Joan of Arc...texturing Joan of arc...bah!), but I would not use the Paint Weight tool (if I can remember correctly, it was written somewhere that the Paint tool of 3ds was not yet a final version, but only a "prototype"), rather use the Weight Table (kinda messy, but very precise with values and parameters). You'll probably get a bad headache after using Weight Table, but I'm sure NO vertex will go with an improper bone after that!

hope it helps,

AXE

I think that's because u selected the vertex level before skin it,
so there isn't vertex will be "skin" except you selected.

Try deselect the vertex level to correct it :)
