Delude 12-02-2006, 10:31 PM does anyone know how can i free up a little bit more my imagination by enabling/disabling and changing the effects settings on a specific frame but not in the others? like change the point of mirror on various frames to descrive for example a circle and change the angle of the mirror and the turning it off?
thanks for your time and attention

To limit an effect to a certain timespan, you duplicate/ split the clip and apply it only to the area you need it. You can of course also animate the effect paramaters such as the blur amount in blur effects or opacity/ intensity in effects such as Glow.

is there no other way? like a timeline of values and keys like in a 3d app?

In my understanding this is exactly the same like

Another one would be using adujstment layers and animate their transpareny or duplicate/split them(which is faster in most cases).

Umm, you work in the timeline and you know how to work with AE's graph editor, don't you? If not, please consult the manual. BTW, AE is no different than 3D programs. In most of them you cannot animate the activation state of deformers or other tools, only modulate their intensity and other parameters (or otherwise your setup would be completely unpredicatbel, would it not?).

Nope. You split them. Just like in PPro you can define individual in- and outpoints for each clip, which is also explained in the manual. The keyboard shortcut for splitting is Ctrl+Shift+D.

it's also listed under the "edit" menu, along with a few other editing commands.

that would be the problem with my right-click, right-hand only kb shortcut, file/layer menu workflowm ya just jump right over the edit menu:D
the menu I ever hit in max is render...kinda nuts how you can get around in window-based apps...

You could also use the "Toggle Hold Keyfram" to jump an effect from one frame to another. I use it all of the time for what you just described. I find it easier than having my clip split up into several pieces that could get messed up if you move one etc. This is especially important if you have a really complex piece and already have a massive amount of layers.
To toggle the "Hold Keyframe" just right-click the key and then in the drop down menu, select "Toggle Hold Keyframe" - easy as pie, your effect, position, etc. will stay exactly in that state until the next key.
This is also an effective way to stop and start animation if you are using the time-remapping feature. It has saved me HOURS of work.
