This was entirely done with Maya 4. I hope there aren't any lego plugins, if there are, I wasted a lot of time. :o

I don't have much lighting experience/knowledge so any tips?

try it with a 3 light rigs..
1 big area light not too brigth
2 spot light ( colored - warm or cold a you want.. )
or try the facked gi lightning rigs in maya.. ( gi_joe )
and play with intensity falloff

Me and a friend once built a car with this lego parts...
anyway great looking model add more details.
