View Full Version : Rig problem in Max - rotation inverted

I am working on an alien character rig at the moment and the character has tentales for arms. I figured out a way to make a relativly easy control using a hose with a Skin Wrap modifier to make the mesh follow the hose.

The rig works great with one minor problem. For some reason the Z rotation Axis won't follow in the correct direction. The pivots are not matched up (although I tried some different orientations for them), but that should not matter because I used Wiring parameters to connect the appropriate axes and even converted the 'Z_Rotation' value to '-Z_Rotation' to try to compensate.

I am a total novice with rigging and I would appreciate it if someone could take a look at it and tell me what I'm doing wrong (and more importantly, how to fix it). I attached a Max file in the Zip on this thread. The file was made in Max 8.

Help!

hey listen i tryed it, and it seems to work, but the ik spins in the wrong directions and i dont understand y. im pretty new into rigging too.

what i did was just wired the control to the IK by just wiring the X rot of controler to X rot of the IK , Y with Y, and Z with Z.

it seems to work but i still dont understand y the IK is rotating all over.
hope it helps

I know that I'm biting off way more than I can chew (by myself at least), but I'm trying to get rigging set up for some of the main characters in a short I'm working on. I'm already working with a couple of writers on my story and have some (really poor quality) storyboarding done. Eventually, I'd like to open the project up to anyone interested in being involved partly to fill in the gaps in my knowledge and as a learning experience, and partly for some of the really talented folks here who work alone and haven't had a chance to get involved with a complete short.

I scrapped the rig a few times and tried it over and over and finally got one to work right. I put a concept sketch and a render of the modeled character here to show what I'm dealing with, and fortunatly, there's very little walking done by this character (or the 3 others like him)...

Any suggestions on how to rig the 'feet' tentacles would be appreciated as well... locomotion with this will be a bit of a pain. The upper body is rigged sufficiently for the animation now, and I'll be moving on to modeling and textureing other characters shortly (but after a week and a half break... I'm in the middle of a move to Iowa).

Meanwhile.. thanks for the feed back and suggestions, since rigging is not my forte. I'll try to get a link up in early January for this project for anyone interested in working on it.
