View Full Version : Rotating the Paper in a program
3dsteve 12-02-2006, 04:49 PM Hey, im looking for a program that lets you easily and quicky rotate the canvas/paper around. Ive been using a Wacom Intuos tablet, ive always had the problem of not being able to rotate the pc screen like I would in real life drawing on paper.
I know programs like photoshop let you rotate the canvas, but im after a more faster option that turns the canvas.
I hope you understand the question. Thanks

Try openCanvas. Version 1.1 is free, small (<1MB), has a great brush engine, allows up to 4 people to connect and draw/paint together, and has the option to rotate canvas (ALT + drag to rotate, ALT to reset) which works really fast even on slower PCs.
You can download version b68 here:
http://home.cwru.edu/~nxl25/downloads/opencanvas.exe (http://home.cwru.edu/%7Enxl25/downloads/opencanvas.exe)
or google for "openCanvas11b72.exe" (the last free version), just be careful and scan the file with some AV because people often put trojans in that file .
Edit: one more thing - it is MS Windows only.
You could always setup a hotkey action to rotate the canvas in PS, I have mine set to F1 and shift F1, to rotate it 90CW and 90CCW

Oh man, painter (corel) definately. Although photoshop will allow you to rotate the canvas, you must go and type in a angle value and then the program has to displace thousands of pixels which if used frequently will waste quite a bit of time; not only waiting for the computer to process it but entering the value in as well.
Use painter. Hold spacebar to move the canvas around; hold spacebar + alt and click and drag with the mouse to rotate the canvas. You get used to it really fast and it becomes incredibly useful for drawing curves, straight lines, or painting tight spots. It is VERY fast as well compared to photoshop.
But actually if anyone knows a quicker way to do this in Photoshop let me know. Ive spent time looking into it and I couldn't find anything.

A good reminder is that, even if Photoshop didn't take too long to rotate, it rotates the image, not the canvas. As so, if you rotate it too much, you'll lose image quality, things will start to get quite blurry.
I've found that Manga Studio rotates canvas view too. While it's great for manga-style lineart and screentones, I haven't tested it for colors yet.
