I was wondering how you make an object, for example a gun to look like a prototype, you know that softish looking texture.
How do you set up the lights? If you use any that is.
Are there any tuts on that?

Hope it makes sense.

Do you mean like the images on www.splutterfish.com ?
For those examples a plugin renderer called Brazil is used.
Most apps that have Global Illumination rendering can achieve the look as well with proper materials and light set up. Just do a search in CgTalk for links/advice as well as taking a look in the Finished Works and WIP sections.

you'll get that kindof look using dome lighting.
