one more question from a 3D newbie

You can first group them (group|group), they will move/rotate etc like one object, and stay being editable as separate object. Just a group then.
You can also put an edit mesh (or convert to poly) and hit "attach" to select others. Then you will have one mesh with your three object.

convert one of the objects to editable mesh/poly... (or editable spline if you're working with splines), then use the attach button in the modify panel....
