I've been wondering for a long time how to do this - if you look at the image here (which by the way, is NOT my work, its just to use as an example) You can see that the toolbox is next to the shelf, and under the shelf is another small layers shelf.

Does anyone know how I can get my interface like that? I'd really like to have my layers under the shelf. Any solutions would be greatly appreciated.

use an older version of maya. ahh, you dont want to hear that! ;) you proabbyl also dont want to hear that'll it'll require you to do some ui scripting. proabably not that hard, and there are probably the relic scripts for those arrangement left in the AW unsupported script folder.

ahh, there is a lot of relic scripts for the layers in the obsolete folder. tho none immediately appear to be for building the UI object itself. if you can finder an older version of maya, perhaps we can have a look at its scripts, and rejig the current ones. can you live w the current arrangement?

My friend said it was probably an older version... But i've seen in a lot of Gnomon videos that Alex Alverez had his layers like that in version 4.0.. or atleast I think it was from 4.0. But anyways, yes I can live with the current arrangement, this old way just seems more convinient. Thanks for the reply!

the reason why they changed it in 4.x is because it allows you to have many more layers in vertical format then horizontal format.

why they didnt do this from the very beginning i dont know....

The horizontal layer bar was just copied from PowerAnimator. In that app there wasn't anywhere in the interface to put a vertcical layer window.

The new layer manager is much more efficient. I remember when they first added that layer manager to PA 8. It was nice, but your limited to only 8 or so showing at the same time, and it was a pain if you needed to reorder them. If you have like 30+ layers it was just a pain in the ass(kind of like when you have 20 tabs in a web browser). The new way is much more similar to something like photoshop. The bottom right of the channel box was usually empty anyways unless you have alot of history.
