A sketch with a bit more time devoted to it. There are a few possibilities with this one. Will experiment with extending the canvas either way. Nothing solidified in terms of story narration, still playing ^^.

You definately have some mileage with this last sketch but i am quite keen on the second also. I am liking the strong perspective in all.

I really like your last sketch. It is very fantasy like, specially because of the colors. Maybe you should bring the perspective a little to the center like you did in the others.

Thats great, thanks very much everyone, i am liking the last one aswell, i took me 2hrs maybe to whip this up, by no means fast, but by my standards, thats quite fast for me XD.
Yea, i actually have two cubes there, but i placed the maltese cross on the wrong end. so will re-work it when i get once i get into a final version..Many thanks for commenting!!.

nice sketches, I like the colors on the last one .. I have the loading problem also, I figured it was because of my rotten dial up connection. Refresh will work, sometimes you just have to refresh about 3 times to get the whole picture to load.

Great sketchwork, Marley, and very individual as well: just from the thumbnail I knew it was you.
I'll join the chorus of approuval for the last one, love how you show the scale and how 'alien' the environment looks even with very familiar shapes (for instance the Malta cross) composing it.
Looking forward to seeing your progress!

Just would like to add that this is by no means "final" in design, but i am liking the perspective, so that may stay.
ohh and tizziano, yea i actually went around a few garage sales yesterday and spotted a cross on a mini cup holder, so i grabbed it for 2 bucks and went with it. haha. i really liked its shape!.

sorry, very small scan of my sketch using a ball point, and slightly coloured. i forgot to save a different version all by itself...though i do have a progress of it in my next post...
Basically, i havn't completely gone off doing axis nader but at the moment i have seen one too many derivatives, all very similarly themed (even though we virtually are depicting the same scenes, given that it is eon.) I thought id try a different tact, see how i go..Looks very messy at this size i know.

Hi, Marley!
I liked your previous sketch a lot, but this one looks absolutely fascinating, can't wait to see it done in your own magic colors.:)
If I can make a little suggestion, the left 'arm' of the foreground element (the part going into the mountain), might be a bit problematic composition and perspective-wise, personally I'd take it away to have a more clearly defined foreground building/structure.
Of course my feeling may just be because of the work-stage (sketches are rarely defined, anyway) and it's just my very personal 2 cents ;) :)
Keep going, mate!

Wow thanks so much for all the comments and compliments, its great to see more than one :P hahahaha
Just seeing if i could actually colour it. it turned out i needed to be quite carefull as the colours tended to look flat over the b&w work.
Those mountains may not be there for too long..i tried and painted over them, while the composition needed work, it did give more focus on the structure, which i liked. anyways..a bit of colour for the mix!!
Thanks very much everybody, greatly appreciated!.

from the previous version, I have actually pushed the colours too far. disapointed, i let it go. Today found an earlier version (Xpress love for earlier versions :scream: ). which had a light dusting of colour..Yayy!!!. got back into it, removed those awefull trees and went with some lines around the pyramid. to make this uplifting swerve, i like it very much. Although only minor differences, i feel back on track which is good!. Also studied some bierdstadt/sp? landscapes to help with contrast and colour a little!!..
And lastly thanks very much for commenting terro :D. always good to get feedback!

Hooray for earlier versions! :)
If you don't mind a suggestion, Marley, and keep in mind it's a pure gut reaction no 'technical', brainy reasons, I liked a lot the mountains on the left in the previous version.
For unknown reasons they felt more appropriate there, to me. I'd suggest flipping the image and see how it feels.
As I said, it's guts talking here, so if you don't see what I'm babbling about don't sweat it, mate! :)

Have extended canvas downwards to get more sense of space. added a teeny tiny character just to get sense of scale sorted out..uumm has highlighted some compositional issues, not too much work i hope.
The canvas could possibly be shifted left a little more and an inch off from the right side, we'll see on that!
Am happy with the liquid energy barrier, something that never left my mind from my earlier concept sketch :P.
but am feeling that buzz that i can finish this piece in good time :D.
Thaldir, thanks, yea i've flipped the image and yo're right accept that the way it is now the building looks questionable :P..thank you

I really like how your piece is coming - the layout, the colors, the mood, and everything!
Only comment I would add is that I have absolutely no clue what part of the book, if any, to tie it to. I really liked your earlier sketches because they said "Eon" strongly. I can understand your reasons for wanting to do an Axis City image, but you may have gone too far in the opposite direction. Perhaps making the backgorund behind your structures clearly cylindrical could help...? Or having a diagonal slash of the plasma tube in the sky, from upper left to lower right, not a hard edges line but a hazy, soft-edged one, could help tie it to the book more too (and look cool, compositionally!)
Anyhow, just some thoguhts. Good luck with it!

Like Walrus I'm not 100% sure were this lies within the book, but with the addition of the plasma tube it deffinenetly nows seems to belong in ThistleDown. But there is something about this piece that makes it one of my favorites. Not sure why I just love it. Extending the canvas down to add the water and the character added tons of depth and scale to the image. I'm glad you went with the subtler colors too.
Crits, not sure what those brigt bles dots are about but they seem to saturated in color compared to the rest of the image
Make sure the plasma tube is centered in the cylinder borehole as it exits the chamber.
I LOVE the pyramid however take it one step further. The book says they used rotated step pyramids throughout the seventh chamber so you might want to do that type here. Basically it is a pyramid that is stair stepped all the way up but each new step is slightly rotated comapred to the previous step.
This is one image I look for eveytime I pop on. Can't wait to see your future development!

Marley -
Good, I'm glad that post was helpful to you! I think your changes are really moving in the right direction. You've got a nice flow, left to right. You've got the cylindrical shape. The one thing I think you still need to think about more is scale.
The chambers are all 50km in diameter. Which means it's 25km from the floor to the Singularity (or if you're not a metric kinda guy, over 15 miles.) The breathable atmosphere only reaches up a small part of that. Looking at your cap, it feels like the chamber is only a half a mile wide or so. If we were looking at a cap behind the building, we'd really only see a small fraction of it. Anyhow, just something to think about: I'd been thinking about the plasma tube going behind the building, not necessarily through it. But anyhow, just some thought to share with you about it.
Good luck!
-mike

Looking at your cap, it feels like the chamber is only a half a mile wide or so.
Hmm, and to me it seems the cap is just HUGE due to the immense size of the chamber itself. I do see where you are coming from though walrus. I agree the cap should be smaller but I do like the size of everything else in scene.

ok. interesting times, i tried to mimmick the structure on the left. if you see on erlier version, not symmetrical..(yet it does work but... while i work in the composition..i won't worry about tonal value at this point..i can see its losing it at the seems but thats ok 32 days left. i'm sure i'll manage P..

..and it would be a shame to miss urs. Simply great! what an organic shape and those soft colors. Again something completely different from others, which is always so nice to see when something pops out from the crowd. The only crit would be that I think the main round part isnt in the right perspective... or it is? It seems strange, headed too much to the viewer. I guess if u put that blue part more to the left, it will read better. My opinion. Keep up the great work!
Wow, pretty unusal! Looks really interesting! I would subdue the color pallette a bit now.. oh and maybe look for some art nouveau style patterns and designs for your piece? Might work here.. The composition with the light beam works very well too. Good luck!

Love where this one is going! :)
As to the right side, for me it's just the fact that the right of the painting is at a lower level of detail (right now) that the left is.

LOVE the improvements. Add a couple more buildings with some nice height, not many you don't want to crowd things. The water improvement is a great improvement. I'd also suggest sofening up the distinction between the brown dirt and the green grass a bit. I really look the banding but the contrast is a little harsh compared to the rest of the image.

Yop, really like your concept man!
Maybe just that I feel a bit of dark tones are missing and so the feel of depth is a bit less.
Great and original!

Looking beautiful :) Not sure what remco or mark meant but if you put some darker tones more toward the foreground and a few harder contrasts it might give you a more dramatic sense of depth...
Thaldir
12-23-2006, 10:27 AM
Agree with Ivy00 on darkening the foreground a bit (in my opinion *that* would be enough to put more contrast in the image).Although you've me too stunned to contribute anything more detailed, it really has the 'multidimensional magic' I feel when reading about gates to parallel universes.

I like the colours and design of this a lot. The tube that is going in though kind of bothers me. It feels like it gets smaller as it gets closer, and also it is going almost directly into the corner there which kind of locks my eye into the upper left hand side of the painting instead of moving me around through the rest of it. I do really like the textures you've built up here though.

edit* the reasoning
Ok a history of the developement of this piece..
Sure was a journey, this piece..
I did do concepts that were fairly close-ish to various descriptions in the novel. But i scrubbed them, as i saw many derivative pieces popping up, which featured similar compositions.
What my next sketch was based on was infact inspired by a pattern of wood grain on the wall above my shower..:wise:.. What i saw in it had my imagination going and i could infact morph it into something which might fit eon.
here it is in my scraps on da
http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/46144419/
About two weeks into this development i hit a well concreted brick wall. The issue was at this stage i was still vague as to what i wanted. Infact it was to the point of not being able to justify why i took the direction at all (hehe quite a gamble placing faith in a wood grain, lemme tell you).
Fortunately I was given quite an insightful dream.
Details of the dream: (and please don't laugh :P )
I am having a conversation with an artist I know online (a representation at least).
She asks me
"what is the significance of the wave?"
I was not only stumped, but embarrased because i had no answer at all, yet this would not be an issue had i re read the "inspiration" section.
I open the actual novel to read but there is nothing but a blank page, Gradually some words appear, as I am understanding what is written, My friend tells me
"The Ability to travel to distant worlds at any point in time you wish"
(close enough, i should have written it down that very day)
As she is speaking, I am given images of us walking onto a platform looking down a vast tunnel surrounded by many many people, watching as a giant and gentle wave glides towards us.
As the wave passes over, A select few have the ability to travel. In a crowd of one hundred, five disappear into another dimension.
The dream ends
Put it this way, this dream gave me enough inspiration to continue and best of all some form of justification about my direction...
This piece to me represents the concept of multi dimensional travel, showing three different realms connected by one massive alien construct (adapted by humans)..
That is the significance of the way...in my mind.
cheers

It's just beautiful, Marley. congrats on finishing. Your piece reminds me of the old Arthur C. Clarke adage, that any sufficiently advanced technology will be indistinguishable from magic. Your landscape is filled with these wonderful, impossible structures and light that feel so much more "sufficiently advanced" than most of the tech the rest of us are cobbling together. :) Great work and congrats for completing it!

Mike, gonzalo, Tiziano, linda, mark and tim. thanks for the fantastic compliments once again. Sure is nice to know what you think of my art..Thanks to all those who have commented throughout the development.this contest truly is a unique experience, very enjoyable and non too complex, love it..
Tim, naa its done, my nerves are shot to pieces unfortunately, and have made a descision to end it here, it seems no one is complaining :). Have to say, been a wee while since i've needed 4 weeks + on any piece, a good 2 years at least!..I'll just explain the buildings are in a different dimension from each other, cheesey but quite plausable :).
does anyone now wether a written description is needed for the final FTP..im no good at writing about my art..

Well I for one LOVE IT. As for a description I'm not sure, I know the Modeling section has to have a description along with the final render and the animation so I'd assume the Illustration section does too.
walrus
01-03-2007, 12:45 AM
You don't need the final description for the FTP, only the "final" post (when you submit your image like normal, but pull down the selection for "final image.") I'm not sure the description really matters all that much for the final judging. It traditionally ranges from long paragraphs about the artistic and mental process of the artist in the ceration of the entry to ultru-brief "here's my final entry" kinds of posts. So it's entirely up to you, and it shouldn't really affect the judging one way or another. It could be a good place to explain how you feel your piece ties in with the 'Eon' universe if you feel it's not entirely self-explanatory.
-mike
One almost hears the music looking at it. It's kind of the world that most of us would like to live in, I guess...
Just beautiful work, well done!
