Hi everybody out there! We're happy we joined you all in this challenge! :)

As the entry information required a real full name we've used Emiliano Colantoni, who had the idea to join the challenge.

ThE-ShiFT team is formed by

Emiliano Colantoni aka Milk-..-Man (team leader)
Gianfranco Sgura aka UpVector
Marco Stellabotte aka SdiRRu

Good luck.

Hey thanks a lot to everybody for your comments! We are really happy of this feedback!
Sorry for coming back so late, but we're working on day so we can dedicate to this forum only the night time!

Anyway I'd like to point out that I'm not alone on this project and we're working as a new group that we call ThE-ShiFT.

@ igorstshirts : the plan is to use these concept as a guide and go on with a mixture of CGI & live action.

We're working on the rough storyboard as well: we'll put it online as soon as it gets a little watchable as it is so rough now that's being difficult for us too to understand it!! LOL!

Great work! That script I wrote in 1999 is actually titled "The Drift"! I just thought of it because I like that spacesuit.

ThE-ShiFT
12-11-2006, 07:29 AM
Thanks guys! The shuttle has been thought to split from the wings part right after the atmosphere has been passed. Only the top module moves from there on, and at the end of the mission the two parts mmets again before the shuttle re-enter the atmosphere. This is for re-utilization pourposes.

@userbrain Amazing coincidences!! We are using this name cause it's a shifting phase for we all in this period. Would be great to know more about your story sometime!

This is it. As the story is enormous we focused on the principal aspects of EON.
We are highlighting the discovery of the asteroid, the exploration, the crisis, and the "run-away" to an unknown future, leaving room for the audience to wonder what's going to happen next.
We focused on the desire to give the audience the most emotive impact possible (for us obviously).
We hope you like it...
Soon we'll post an animatic with a rough version of the soundtrack.

See you for the next updates.

Namaste and...good luck! ;D

Wow! I've been totally impressed by your thread, and your latest posts simply reinforce that. I love the concept art, the style, everything. And the boards are very well done, and have a nice logical flow to them.

One very minor thought: I like how the shots of going into Patrici's eyes both at the beginning and end serve to bookend the entire trailer. But there's another close-up of Patricia's eyes on the ninth page (cut 22?), and I wonder if maybe that interrupts those bookends (that is, one too many shots into her eyes), though maybe not as long as it doesn't go in too close. But as I said, a very minor point and in the end mostly personal preference I expect.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this one come to life. Only one month, but I'm sure your team can do it!

ThE-ShiFT
12-16-2006, 12:02 AM
Fifty3 you could be right! We'll have the real opportunity to check this as soon as we get working on the animatic, then will be a matter of seconds to cut/substitute that shot.
Anyway we know that the pace of the editing at that point in the trailer will be so fast and pressing that the cut we're talking about will be on screen like a second, a second and a half at most.
We'll keep an eye on this anyway...thanks a lot!

Nice character concepts. I like the stylistic approach. I hope that translates in 3D as well. Your trailer looks very ambitious. My only concern, which you probably share as well, is that there are 27 days left and you may have some sleepless nights to get through. Hopefully you've finishing up on your modeling and texturing and have started animating. Good luck.

I am not that sure about this mention. I see this project very ambitious, storyboards and style here look just great but time is running. Do you folks have any plans to get real animation into it? Or is this going to be kind of polished storyboards? Keep going  Gonna watch this thread...

Fabio you're too kind! thanks a lot! We are enjoying the challenge so we're doing our best, but of course there are other works that rocks, and your one is surely one of them too.
Anyway we all should keep in mind that the final look doesnt really have the heaviest weight for the final judgment in this category. Indeed the story has, as mentioned in the guidelines for the trailer challenge : story is king.

Hi Oweron! We're not worring about animation just because we're going to use live action for chars and CGI for enviros . We stated it at the beginning of the thread an even ahead btw...maybe it wasn't enough visible. Our shooting is by the end of this month and we'll have the remaining two weeks to work on the comps.
Of course as RaresHalmagean observes we're going to have a really intense xmas and some sleeples night too! :D But hey... after all this is as our life has been in the last eight years anyway!!!

Cheers anyone!

Ah, so live action could be really nice timesaver. I usually looking and not reading, so you can blame me, he he. I thought you are going for full CG production because of your nice character designs. And speaking about Challenge guideline "story is a king" - yes, sure, but we are running CGI challenge so I guess there need to be good visual impact hand in hand with story.
However, your production is great so far. Good luck!

Wow, very promisign trailers, nice storyboard, models, concepts... I will keep watching this thread for further updates, at this point it looks very good. I just would change the patricia scene when she holds her hands up, maybe I should shoot her back and them turn her arround when she starts watching the aliens, it would add more sauce... but that's just me hehe.

Keep it up and good luck to your team!

We noticed with our last update that the clips are showing a little bit darker than the originals. In the last one the stone at the end should have been lighter as well as the stars....anyway...maybe we should push up the brightness before compressing in flv.

Maybe you need to bring some light to the background? Stars/sunLight (rays)?

ThE-ShiFT
01-10-2007, 02:21 PM
Well must be really a matter of flv compression because if you look at the sequences as they run in TGA they're fine and you see both the stars and the stone...anyway the last update we forced the brightness a lot and it seems to be a little better in flv...

Hey guys thanks a lot for your comments! Yes we also spent the last day wondering why the submission clock were showing 21 days to go! That's an awesome news!!!

The best part of the camera shake in the troopers scene is that it has been disrtibuted on two layers: the troopers and the whall behind (I'm not totally sure because who did that sequence is not here at the moment and I can't ask) having the wall moving half the space of the other layer, thus giving you parallax...

Keep up guys! 20 days to go!

Oh...thanks a lot for your comments! Very encouraging!
We're three people working on CGI & compositing (day & night) and a friend working on the soundtrack. This is our team. Two of us have just fired themselves after having worked as slaves for about 7 years in a small shop here in Italy (LOL). We're also splitting on some other job of course as we have to start earning something as soon as possible.
One thing we want to be precise with, is that we just asked some friend to help us on the things that weren't strictly related to the CGI stuff. A friend helped with the photography and another with the shooting. Plus we had our girlfriends going around to buy the most desparate things to build the space suit and Emiliano with his lovely mother Enrica with needle and thread :buttrock:

Anyway Juraj plz don't say you don't see reasons to keep on the challenge :). As we already sayd we like your style a lot, and the judgment will consider first of all the storytelling. The technical aspects come after.

Ok here we are: these are three pics showing Simonetta and Emiliano as they dress Gianfranco. The operation required something like 30 minutes.
One pic shows the back part of the suit: it was made of four plastic-glass holders broken and rebuilt to resemble similar to the original concept. They were then painted with a nice gray metallic paint and filled with four lights that you normally would pin to your book cover to read it at night.
Also the central element derives from the same plastic-glass holders, except for the lower part that was actually a toy sword (I believe...don't remember exactly).
Everything has been put together by Emiliano's mother under, of course, his maniacal supervision LOL.
Depending on the time we find the suit shoule be completed with the CGI helmets in the final comps, but firstly we want to finish everything.

Ciao!

I want to ask you, what camera did you use to shoot the stuff. It seems to be HD or 35mm film, but it could be video with good color correction.

I think it's HD with 25 Progressive Scan, Square Pixels and very close to film image 1920 1080 resollution lowed to 640 480. If your friend who shooted the stuff is a student in film school it is possible.
For example we shooted with HDV in 1080 720 and lowed it to 640 480 because of the rules of the contest.
Can you give me some info about this?

Ok guys thanks again for all your feedback ! We managed to put together a little brakdown of a sequence we've just finished...hope you'll like it.
BTW..sorry for the speed it has, but we compressed the time to avoid bandwidth pollution.

shearerludmil : we used a Sony HDR-FX wich allows to record interlaced high definition video at resolutions up to 1440 x 1080, pretty much higer than the final output of course, but really helpful when it comes to roto-stuffing and keying...We would have loved to shoot @ full HD 25P but what we had in the end was fantastic anyway (Dan thank you a lot bro' :-)).

Level of commitment and professionalism is truly on its own here. Good chance to learn from the pros. What keyer and tracker did you use, and did you have to resort to rotoing much? Thanks AOK for your comments and interest! You know yours is one of our favourite trailers!
So, we are doing the match moving by hand as those sequences are not really that hard to solve: short duration, no need for contact shadowing (so we don't have to be 100% precise). Some of the sequences are just nodal pans.
Right now I'm giving a call to our nearest psychiatric hospital, as I'm solving the movement of the spacesuites to add the helmets.:D
We are working in XSI so no need for external keyers or roto tools, and yes, we had to do rotoing due to the white crosses (we should have made them green but this has been a learning process for we too), but we have our Marco who's committment to rotos is great :wise: (LOL)...

I'm really impressed by how seemlessly you composite your actors into the scenes. The shot of the astronauts exploring the stone is a great example. You guys could actually make the whole movie. :) Love the "apocalyptic" shot too. Does it use just three planes, or are there more? And are any of the buildings actual models, or is it all matte paintings/photographs? Very well done.

ThE-ShiFT
01-20-2007, 03:58 PM
Are you a professional studio? That bluescreen looks very substantial.

Sorry for having missed this question! This is how things are right now: no, we are not a studio at all, but that's exactly what we want to enstablish.
As we mentioned in an earlier post two of us, Emiliano and Gianfranco, just fired themselves after having worked for seven years in a small shop here in Italy. Our desire to be on our own was growing to the point that we decided to do it.
We asked our ex boss if we could use his stage (as a last present) and he's been really kind to let us use it (thanks Sergio for this).
So, from January the first we are on our own and we are going to found a shop right after this challenge ends.
We needed more stuff for our reel and we were projecting to work on some shot just to make them. Emiliano thought about taking the chance to join the challenge both to partecipate and to have something to put in the reel...and we all are happy he had this idea!
In the beginning of this thread there is the list of all the members of this team, and in another post we also mentioned other figures that kindly offered to help us (thanks to all them again!!!)

@ fifty3dragons : man you're a great motivating person. thanks a lot! Anyway we really doubt we could even joke about making the whole movie lol.
The "apocalyptic" shot uses 2 planes: the background is a matte paint and the foreground are simple 3D models (plain Phong shading there, not even bump). Plus the elements that actually makes the explosion (a sphere and a disc), and the particles for the mssile trail.
The composite does the melting.

So...We managed to add the helmets to the space suits as these were supposed to be: real suits, CGI helmets.
Due to the tracking issues, we were on the point of dropping this task and leave the suits without the helmets, but the time extension gave us the opportunity to work on them.

The tracking is hand made, these is the result on the sequence n° 015, that was previously posted w/out helmets.

Wow, another great shot! I never would have guessed the actor wasn't wearing an actual helmet.

Oh, and I was serious about the movie comment! :) Maybe not Eon, since you'd need to obtain the rights and I suspect that's not cheap for a well known work like that, but you could totally do your own independent short film or something and I'd definitely be the first in line to see it. There's one that just got released on DVD by a group of independents called "The Ore (http://www.theore.net/qt/ore_teaser_hd.mov)." From what I can see the stuff your team has turned out here is certainly on par with that. Not necessarily easy to find the time, and you'd want a good script, but hey I didn't say it would be easy just that I'd watch it!! :scream:

Really great stuff. I wish you guys all the best in setting up your own studio!

Lot's of exceptional entries are around here, so let's keep pushing towards the end!
We are on our way to post a workflow movie for one of the last sequences and the Initial SFX and Music milestone, which is still a wip anyway. Surely David is going to keep working on it till the last minute. We're almost done, CGI rendering it's finished, then we have a week for color grading and bug fixing here and there. Ouffff...I think we didn't love any other job like this one :)

I'm already blown away by your work, and here you guys are saving the very best shots until the end!!!

For the skin texturing, did you use the actors own image or use some stock textures and simply match it up? And how long does it take you to do the tracking for a shot like that?

Hey mate that's a good question! In this case (cause this technique has some limitation) you can actually use a frame from the same footage you're effecting. You match the 3D over the footage. At that point it's really a matter of photo-retouching that frame to paint the nose following the modelled shape as a guide, and camera-map that frame over the mesh using a constant shading model (self-illuminating in max I believe).
The effect will render faster than everything else because it's really a constant material (so no shading at all), and the effect will be as PR as the real footage.

The time to track a shot like that depends on how precise you want to be. It's really a 2D tracking if you think about it. Anyway the 3D model and the tracking were done in about 5 hours. The tracking took like 2 hours.
This tasks have been done around genuary the 3rd, when we where in such a hurry, that we decided to jump to the next task to get the job done. that's why we were talking about retouching the effect.

Hi everybody out there! This is our trailer in it's almost definitive version,
also talking about the soundtrack. We are going to use the remaining days for cleanup and fine tuning.
Something that still isn't present are the subtitles and we are thinking whether inserting or not some other cut that for now has been removed.
We need feedback and comments, expecially talking about storyteling, as we want ( in the limits of feasibility ) to fix those issues that maybe we're missing. Thank you all in advance for this.

First off, that is absolutely fantastic work! When I look at what your team has acheived in the past three and a half months, I'm extremely impressed. Great job! Simply outstanding!

There's definitely a lot to like. I thought the soundtrack and SFX fit perfectly. Good overall pacing, and some nice change-ups between faster more frantic stuff and slower parts as well. I loved Olmy's voice. It actually feels like a real trailer, like I'd expect to find it on the Apple website or something. I think that's the best compliment I can give an entry in a contest like this.

You asked for feedback, so I'll throw in my two cents for what it's worth. Just my own opinion, so use what is helpful and ignore the rest. :) Here's a few thoughts on some possible adjustments:

1) You mentioned subtitles; that would be great if you have time to put them in (for us English-only speaker types).

2) The countdown for the launch sequence is in English while everything else at that point is in Russian (?) (I'm guessing here :) ). It seems to me that having the countdown in Russian would provide greater continuity. I don't even think you'd need to subtitle that; I'm sure it would be obvious what's being said.

3) After the shot where they're at the entrance to the Stone, when the astronaut/cosmonaut with the great helmet job and the lights on his back walks past (around the 39 second mark), for some reason I keep wanting to hear his footsteps or something from that particular environment. From what I can tell it's strictly soundtrack/SFX at that point, but I wonder if maybe a little bit of foley would work in there as well. Just personal taste on that one.

The same with the shot of Patricia walking in that long corridor when we see her back. I think some echoing footsteps or crunching of gravel (since the soundtrack is really low at that point) could possibly add to the atmosphere.

4) The volume of Patricia's narration in particular could perhaps be increased just slightly. I understood her well enough, but felt she was competing with the soundtrack a little (I've said the same on a couple of other trailers as well, so maybe it's just my speakers :scream: ).

5) When the Frant drops down behind the guy holding the pistol, he seems to land rather hard (i.e. there's not much bounce in his landing; he almost seems to stop short). I might have expected just a bit more of a bounce as he hits and recoils back upwards a bit. I know there's some, but I found it almost imprerceptible.

6) This one is going to seem really picky, but at the end of the shot where the Frant throws the soldier aside, his chin/head seems to be slightly up. But in the shot following Olmy when the Frant then turns and faces the camera, his chin/head seems to be down again. I had to watch it through six or seven times to figure that out, and I'm still not a hundred percent sure I'm seeing it right, but it looks that way. Anyway, like I said, that's being very picky. :)

And that's about it. Hopefully there's something useful in there.

And again, great trailer. Just my opinion, but I think this one is a very strong contender for one of the prizes, quite possibly first place. Great job!!!

Congratuation!
Now? my question about plasma and lighting effects at the final part od the trailer.
After FX plugin or particles from MAX ?

Thaldir
01-27-2007, 09:29 AM
I just had to pick up my jaw from the floor and glue it on again before being able to comment.

Your shots have been amazing from the start, but the trailer itself...WOW!

I think that, if you have time, subtitles for the parts in Russian would be a great addition.

The countdown in English doesn't bother me. If I'm not mistaken, most of the world's space agencies do use English...same with Patricia's narrative, on my machine I hear her clearly above the soundtrack.

And that's about it for me...

Wait, not quite, one question, really...

...When does the movie come out?

shearerludmil
01-27-2007, 09:32 AM
I love the scene with the murder of the soldier. The actors play great! The trailer is very good!
I have some question about the music - is it recorded specialy for the trailer? Because it is maded in acoustic studio.

zer05um
01-27-2007, 01:42 PM
Simply amazing work - as others have said it almost feels like a "Real" trailer. Bravo.

As for feedback, well, there isn't really that much I can crit at all. Only two minor points as far as I can see.

1) The Frant seems VERY solid. When it drops down it seems to land like a solid object like a statue or a block, not something organic; there's no real feel of give in the legs I guess.

2) at around the 55 second mark, the Russian in the red suit (Mirsky?) seems to float slightly against the vehicles in the background - his motion doesn't QUITE agree with the backdrop - but the discrepancy is really tiny and may just be my eyes. I've watched it several times and I THINK I can see it if you follow me.

I hope you're proud of your work. You should be!

DMarkwick
01-27-2007, 03:25 PM
Wow, I've said it before, but here is the winner :) nothing to critique about this at all, it looks like a very polished and professional work, which of course it is.

I'd liked to have seen some scenes that show the sheer scale of the inner of the Stone, but the trailer doesn't need it for it's effectiveness. A terrific job all round guys, well done to you all.

Hi everybody! And thank you all for your inputs!

@ fifty3dragons: thank you soooo much for your time and patience to sit and write all those precious comments! We really appreciate your inputs and will surely work on the things you've pointed out, like the footsteps sound and the Frant looking too rigid (this last one is already under maintenence ehehhe).
When you hear the countdown, that's only in english, the russian part is Mirsky remembering the orders he was given by a Russian general. But the subtitles will surely clearify these things.
The audio issues are strange, cause here we hear everything perfectly, as some other else has pointed out. But anyway we will lower the music a bit in those dialogue parts.

@ ittrium: thanks a lot! The particle effect is a previously rendered, heavily manipulated, fractal animation that we mapped onto a simple cylinder, and furter manipulated in comp.
The fractals have been generated with Fractal flames, a fantastic free piece of software able to create animated fractals. check this out: http://flam3.com/
It also works as a plugin for The Gimp.

@ Thaldir: LOL the picture you've described here made our day for sure! Thanks a bunch for your support! We're going to insert subtitles for sure, that was already planned, but now we know it's a must.

@ shearerludmil and Bethoven: thanks for your comments too! the music has beens completely writen start to end for this trailer from David, a member of our team. He plays in a band, has the passion for sound engineering, and of course has his own self made in-house (seriously) recording studio. Anyway I think he used some sample for the chorus.

@ zer05um : thanks a bunch for your contribution! We are already working on the Frant to fix his rigid look. Unfortunately we can't afford revising that shot of mirsky from the tracking stage as this would mean re-track, re-render and re-comp everything. But anyway thanks again for pointing that out: we'll fix it for our reel.

@ DMarkwick : man thanks for your comments! We would have loved having you in this team, you know? Everytime I take a look at your shot I'm amazed by the sense of immense scale you've been able to render. Full stop.

@ targus: thanks a lot to you too for taking the time to give input and constructive criticism. As already said the audio seems to be OK on our side, but we're going to lower it a bit anyway cause this will broaden the chance to be perfectly heard anywhere.

01-28-2007, 03:17 AM
Glad I could be of some help. :)

I should clarify my comment on Patricia's narration: I can hear her and understand what she's saying okay, but it just seemed to me that her voice is slightly lower in volume than the other actors, especially at the point in her narration where it shows the book she's reading from. I just listened to it again and I'm still convinced of it (the more so since everyone else's dialogue sounds fine). But it's a very minor shift if it is indeed there. If it needs any change at all, it would be a very, very small one. But go with your instinct. I'm the newbie, remember? :D

On the off chance you have time to field another question, I wanted to ask about compression. You guys have such a clean looking video (and at only 12MB). I've been having trouble getting ours to come out quite that clean. Any suggestions/tips on settings? I'm using Premiere Pro 2.0 and rendering directly to .flv format. If you don't have time to answer, no worries. We'll get it as smooth as we can. Just figured it couldn't hurt to ask a group that obviously knows what it's doing. :)

ThE-ShiFT
01-28-2007, 03:22 PM
Glad to help Fifty3....we are compressing first to .mov with the animation codec (pretty much a RLE compressor) and then reconverting to FLV via the Riva encoder.
Go get it here:

http://www.rivavx.com/index.php?downloads&L=3

we use 640*480, 1000 Kbps, 25 F/s as we work in pal, deinterlace off, audio is a minor issue here so the deafaults are working good, though we will increase the sampling in for our final version.

Hope this helps

Oh, one small thing I noticed (in case you intend to post a hig-res version of your trailer somewhere, which you most definitely should :) ):

The wording for one of the subtitles:

"Your limitation measures on the stone seem not to work."

... should perhaps read:

"Your limited measures on the stone seem not to work."

... or even a little smoother might be something like:

"You limited measures on the stone don't seem to work." (or maybe even better "... don't seem to be working.")

Just in the interests of making it as perfect as posible.

fifty3dragons
02-01-2007, 04:06 PM
Edit to the previous post:

I took another look at your boards, and I'm wondering now if what it is saying is "your measures/attempts to limit us don't seem to be working" i.e. limitations put on the Russians by the Americans. I'm not 100% sure since he seems to be talking to his fellows Russians at that point. But that would be where the word "limitation" comes from, I expect.

If that's the case, you might still want to consider changing the wording a bit since the wording "limitation measures" feels a bit awkward (to me anyway), especially in that context. Perhaps, "You're measures of limitation don't seem to be working." ... or "Your attempts at limitation don't seem to be working." I realize there's some underlying Russian dialogue there, but unfortunately I don't know exactly what they're saying. :)

So I'm not sure if that's a help or not. Sorry if it's unclear. :)

Hi Fifty3 and thanks again for taking the time to help. The russian guy is talking to the americans (you can guess that cause they speak english) and he means "the limitations that the americans have put on the russians seem not to work".
We've submitted this sentence to a friend to see if it was right prior to posting the final entry and she told it was all ok. So I don't really know now. I only got a first certificate, so I just can't be really sure. Anyway...the more it leaves to the audience to guess....the better it is in my opinion.

wow, this is really great, the grafics and sound are near perfect.

only one little crit there is, on the russian voices, i dont know who translated over there for you guys, but theres some things wrong:
1. when the subtitle says 'and again, pay attention' the russian text ( 'i ishe ras' ) only covers the 'and again', the 'pay attention'; is missing
2. also 'this is just the begging' , the 'just' is translated as 'prosta' wich is really way wrong in this special term, it has to say 'eto tolko natchala'. also the speaker has a horrible accent wich is quite common in us movies though, since for some reason in that big country theres not too many people who speak properly russian. well gives it a cinematic touch ^.^

keep up the great work, and perhaps yall find someone who can fix those russian passages for ya ;)

Hey miguelslo, pogonip, Dervish, Joblh thank you very very much for you kind comments!!

@ miguelslo: LOL! We promise you'll have it! Be sure!
@ Dervish: thank you a lot for your points...we'll send them to the person who made the translations (he's the actor who plays Mirsky BTW) and hopefully we'll find the time to correct these issues.
Anyway we must admit we've been already lucky in finding someone who knew russian!! ehheeheh..

Ciao!!

I am myself a more traditional artist but I have a grand appreciation for films and well composed trailers! Gorgeous work, and though some folks here are saying the Russian accents are a bit off..the ironic thing is, they are actually a hundred times better than MOST Russian accents in Hollywood films. Two thumbs up, very engaging trailer. Best of luck to you guys and thanks for the piece.

Wow, wonderfull fantastic.
But I think you have done everething wrong, you can take one more month and produce a complete film and sell it all over the world.
I'll buy the ticket. :bounce: :bounce:

We Ragazzi avete fatto il botto! Complimenti!! Il trailer è fenomenale! Va beh il mio inglese fa pietà, comunque si capiva che scherzavo vero? :P
