View Full Version : 3D controllers in XSI
Bullit 11-30-2006, 01:27 AM I saw that 3Dconnexion dropped their price of their SpaceNavigator to 59$. Anyone use XSI with a controller like that? Any opinion?

Just responded in the CGNews thread. I can't tolerate working with them, and I tried really, really hard.

:) thanks for your feedback. Btw There is also an interesting link to an Interface Conference posted on XSIbase.

lol, so autodesk kicked it again, hehe
i use spacepilot for rhino, 3ds max and xsi and am superhappy. BUT i personally would not go for the Puck only (navigator/traveller edition). i need the customizable keys. if i do not have them i will switch too much from the navigator to keyboard and back.
maybe you have to try the new drivers, i had a lot of issues with the old drivers, but now the setup, handling and stability is great.

I use a full on space ball for solid modeling and it works fine because you only use one perspective viewport all the time.

I HATE the spaceball. Tried working with it and it was a mess.

Thanks for replies. I am not convinced too. Like it was noted i would still need the keyboard and the mouse.

The SpacePilot is much better than the SpaceBall, Overall becuase the use of the Puck is much more responsive and quicker. Takes some time to get used to but I like it for navigation and you can capture the movements of objects if auto key is on.
I got one ( the $99 2 button Nav one ) and I like it Very much =)

Can you tell us how it works for you? It replaces the mouse?

If somenone would like a space pilot for a fair price, then make me an offer. I have one. a month old, used for two days and I don't like it. I bought it a safeharbour, the maufacturer does not accept that for a trade back within the 30 days. Bastards. Nothing wrong with the device. Works well with C4D and XSI. But I use also ZBrush and a few other Apps. And then it doesn't work but get's into my way on the small desk I have. It's in new condition.
Let me know if someone is interested. And serious offers please. It's worth mroe than 5$ ok!
Cheers

I'll be more precise: For modeling with an hand in Keyboard and another in it would i need to get the hand out of it? Another issue can i use the Q(render region) with it and without need of the mouse?

First I was full of joy reading this but I can't take my left hand off keyborard, it has grown in to it. It should be total replacement for standard mouse or no go. My longterm plan has been Kensington Optical Expert Mouse trackball. Anyone share experiences.

Mine are from so long ago and from Turbo Mouse era. Now I'm using optical Logitech trackballs and despite of their age I haven't felt real need to upgrade. Money always slips to something more accurate, though this is one very minor thing as investment.

You cannot have a hand in the keyboard and hand on the space ball at the same time , you have to use it with your keyboard hand. There really is no benefit whatsoever , just put that money towards a nice wacom tablet and you'll thank me later :)

I got a Wacom and tried to used it to replace my mouse, But it just didn't feel right
for me a nice small Keyboard is king. ( Dell has a good keybaord )
a real CAD 3 button mouse (http://www.contourdesign.com/perfit.htm) ( with a cord, Wireless SUCKS )
and Space Nav for scene and Camera nav. ( tried modeling with it but it doesn't feel right I think it's because I'm using my left hand )
and a Wacom for Painting in Modo, Photoshop, Painter etc
NOOOOOOOOO MY 3d connexion is Broken in XSI 6.0 ! :banghead:
 opps .. I reinstall the 3d connexion driver and it works now :D

That's my take to. It must replaces the mouse or instead the hand in keyboard but obviously that later one would be impossible.

Already have :) . I used it a couple weeks ago to select dozen of lines perpendicular to an irregular terrain border line. Much more precise for that than the mouse.

Well, I got a SpacePilot for Christmas and I'm loving it. Works even better in XSI than I thought it would. My mouse hand literally wept when it learned it wouldn't have to handle navigation any longer. :)
Couple of questions though...
1. I set up a couple buttons for Translate, Rotation, and Scaling tools. Problem that I've found that if you don't press the button again to deselect it before hitting another button to use another tool, it gets stuck on the tool. For instance, select an edge, hit rotation tool, move it, then hit translate tool. You can, of course, turn it off on the keyboard as you normally would but it's slightly annoying. Any tricks on this or does the driver need adjustment?
2. Can't find Bevel Components. I found bevel in the list of commands but I'm pretty sure that's a deprecated command. Am I missing it or does that need updating?

I want to buy a spaceExplorer, that is a new one, with a more ergonomic design. Any ideas? Would the spacePilot be better or the explorer?
I already have a wacom tablet, and I use it exclusively (no mouse) when modeling. It works great, but I have RSI, and even with the tablet I get pain. (my mouse arm gets tired)
So I think with the 3d controller, it would minimize the need to navigating with my mouse arm.
How does it work? Is it like the wacom tablet, which you can setup keyboard mappings onto custom keys? Or the way around, driver detects commands... I hope the first one.

You make your own menus and can have as many as you'd like. From what I've seen so far, pretty much every command is exposed. I've just had trouble with the couple that I posted before and would still love an answer to from T4D if he knows.
I think it's more a question of preference and budget for you.

sorry guys Only really started back at work today ..:)
Yes with what i have seen with my Sapce Navigator ( only 2 buttons ) you can set it up just like a Wacom and set the buttons to do anything you want. ( keyboard shortcut or direct XSI interface )
But I left it standard the right button open the XSI 3d connexion menu inside XSI, where you have all the XSI focused options ( speed, object or camera movement only, axis filters and button editing etc etc etc ) the left button Fits all to view.
simple, nice and Still a joy to uses :buttrock:

ok is the spacetraveler only good for navigating ? is it for 3d modeling. if so , how precise is it for pushing vertex.

These are for navigation only, not to move components around.
