Is there any specific size I should render my animations to before I start rendering high-res clips of them so I can edit them?

I'm originally setting them up for 720x576 which I understand is DVD PAL, but should I be rendering higher so I can edit at a higher res for possible playback on the HD standards or even Betacam conversion?
