View Full Version : Max distance for particles?

Hi all,

I have what seems a simple question. Trying to brush up on Maya at the moment.

I have an omni emitter with a keyed emission of particles. Just a quick burst, and I would like the particles to travel only so far. I have used Max Distance (and Min Distance)...but no luck. It doesn't seem to affect my particles at all. Do I have to use the distance they travel by killing them off via LifespanPP or something? Which reminds me...have you been able to use a ramp for LifespanPP in the past? I haven't used Maya in years.

Thanks for any tips!

Alex

ok alex,

1. if u want the particles to die off/fade off as they travel... then use lifespan

2. if u want then to travel upto some distance and stop or slow down(not die)...then try settiing key on ur conserve value

3.or else if u want them to not travel so far u can also try to bring down ur emmitter speed...
but this will also slow down ur particles

hope one of this will do wht u want... :)

Thank you

I needed a quick burst but also not a long burst (which is why I had speed set high).
I think I may have something overriding Max Distance, because I opened an older scene
and it's working exactly like I need. I'm goofing with expressions so I may have done
something there.

Oh, and shouldn't LifespanPP be able to be controlled by a ramp? When I right click I don't get that option..just options to make expressions. Yet other PP attributes I can make a ramp for them. I'm sure I'm forgetting something

Thanks!

ok..

u are right... lifespanPP is expression driven.

but i think u can instead do the same thing wid a ramp on opacityPP.
when u set a ramp on opacity PP u can control the fade off of particles
based on ur lifespan value..
end result is all the same

ah, makes perfect sense..
I'll try that instead.

Thanks!
