Title: Captain's Quarters
Name: Reed Eriksson
Country: United States
Software: Maya, mental ray, Photoshop

I have always wanted to do a candle-lit scene, so here it is. I love the way old people and old objects look...the dark, sometimes dull colors, the aged textures...so I started building a few objects and ended up with this scene. I didn't want to place anything in the scene that would suggest it fits an exact time period, thus the viewer can determine for themself whether this is the year 1500 or 2000 (not sure when glasses were invented, but thats the beauty of it). Critiques and comments are welcome.

ver well! i think you made a pretty good job when it comes to lighting.

i'm not sure about the spoon. the glass got some really nice reflections, but the spoon looks a bit funny for a relfective material as it probably is.

i like to mood you've created with the candlelight.

I think you're right about the spoon. I was getting some nice reflections before, but I ended up moving it to make a better composition. I guess I moved it to the wrong spot :P. Thanks for the input.

I think the spoon is rendering black because it lacks stuffs to reflect. I have the same problem. what shader are you using for the spoon?

I'm using a simple chrome shader. I think to solve the problem I'll apply an HDRI and have it just effect reflections. That should bring out the spoon a little more.
