View Full Version : Animation: demo reel for crit
March 18:
Here's the latest tweak of that content.
at least the animation challenge this month will gimme something new to add.

you can compare it with the links below.

OOOOLLLLLDDDD POOOSSTTTTTT
so here's the latest cut of my reel.
It's still sorely missing more personality/acting animation, and is almost entirely gameloops.
choose wisely :)
10 MB Divx 5.03 AVI (http://www.valleydweller.com/resume/jerO_reel_anim_0302_320.avi)
33 MB codec-friendly cinepak AVI (http://www.valleydweller.com/resume/jerO_friendly_anim.avi)
feel free to be as brutal as you wish, given that i need a freaking job and if there's something i missed that's easy to fix i might be able to make the changes between freelance gigs.
thanks,
jerO

About a quarter of the way through I was thinking, dang this guy is set if all he wants to do is make floating characters :), but after that I have to say, good uses of the traditional means of animating. You have good weightshifting in your motions and your walk cycles. I would say overall, there's a unity problem though. Your pieces don't seem very cohesive as one reel, so i'd say drop those animatic tests at the end. Personally I felt your individual loops were your best stuff, but thats just my opinion.

Haha long live floaty physics!
no, actually that kinda drove me nuts with that stuff.
I do prefer having things grounded.
Yeah, the more i look at it the more i think the bizarro
clone stuff should almost get dropped because there's
a few held poses there that aren't "moving holds". freakin'
11th hour crunches. I'd like to keep the hammer swing and the shifter anim from the other cins though, as i think they're pretty decent.
I need to finish up a bunch of contract stuff fast so i can do some more stuff that's like "tactical shooter in a realistic style" . Something that's missing from my reel.
gah, why is this never easy and at a good time?

not that bad, but you should really go through the extra effort to make the characters that have feet and are floating actually be on the ground.

Oh, it's not that i _wanted_ them to be floating.
There are really no animations in Superman: The Man of Steel for the Xbox that actually are on the ground except for random citizens in peril and Supes himself. everything else (well, that i worked on anyway) flies around and never lands at all.
Do you think it should start with some grounded guys first instead of all the floaty guys back-to-back?
That might make it less "odd".

150% better at showing your skills off, than the last version. Great work on it!
thanks. I actually had a buddy of mine come down and cut most of it together while i churned out new renders.
As an aside, and still fits in with the whole "promoting myself" thing, i re-did the reel download page yesterday, if you wouldn't mind checkign it out and giving me feedback on it as well i'd appreciate it.
here's the reel/resume page (http://www.valleydweller.com/resume/resume.html)

Not a bad layout, the text color bugs me on the top line, Maybe choose something a little darker. I dig the pictures showing your shipped titles and the arcade game you worked on.

Nice stuff! I'm new at this low-poly thing so looking at your work is a great help. I do think it would be a good idea to break up the floating guys with some grounded characters. Keep it up
Dtrimble and Dan,
thanks for the feedback. changing the page will be the easier of the two right now, but if i have time, i'll see if i can't go in and bust up the shots at the beginning of the reel.
thanks!

adding a reply to bump it, but the new remix of the redo of the updated demo reel is here:
http://www.valleydweller.com/resume/jerO_reel_03_remix.avi
it's only 4MB in Divx5.03 now, and is pretty much to the point now at 1 minute 25 secs.
I took out the cinematic stuff, and junk that i didn't do as much on as other stuff.
Lemme know what you think.

A lot better than your first reel.
this one show your awesome skill on animation
care to tell us what software u use to animate ??
hey, thanks.
pretty much everything in there was animated and rendered in 3DS Max 4.2 with CS3 biped rigs. All freeform. errr ... can't think of anything else. Or if the above information is correct :)
thanks for checkin' it out.

JerO,
Things are looking good, but it would be good to see a little more variety. Maybe take a couple of weekends and do some stuff that doesn't loop. Maybe some acting pieces? Check out the 10 second club, good place to start. http://10secondclub.org/
One crit though, the floating guy that shoots, his legs are a little limp. Just cause they're hanging doesn't mean that they wouldn't be a little more rigid. They look like wet noodles.
Great Start!

Zach, dont' you know it.
yeah, i really wish i had time to do some stuff with more "character". Right now, my unemployment checks are still $300 short of rent and with a wife and two kids, i'm spending all my time on contract gigs and can't really work on my reel.
Oh well, working on cashing out my 401k plan so maybe i can have a few days to do something new and cool. Thanks for the link, i'll totally check it out!
