View Full Version : netrender + xfrog?
interactiveBoy 11-28-2006, 11:04 PM I've contacted greenworks support about this, but don't anticipate hearing back until tomorrow or the next day, so once again thought I'd check here. I have found no information about running Xfrog with NetRender on greenworks.de. When I try, it only allows one instance of the plugin, so only the first client to use it is allowed. I'm guessing either it is not supported at all, or it is a totally unique (custom) license key that would allow multiple clients to access the plug. At $400 a pop, that would be a little cost prohibitive. (I have 7 workstations here drooling at the chance to render this job)
Then there's the whole mixed network issue. How do you guys deal with plugins on your mixed render farms? I'm guessing you either stick to one platform, or buy the necessary plugs for both?
Dann? Are you still around here?
Thanks
G

xfrog works fine with NET - the NET clients don't need a serial number - usually ony for interactive workstation use is a serial required. are you using 4.3 under R10 - i just installed that a few days ago and not done any xfrog test renders yet - but i don't recall seeing any errors like you describe.
also xfrog works on both platforms - so it should be no problem cross platform. i use osx servers and XP render clients.
yes, i'm still around, just seems not too much time for posting lately - although i do still troll around and read as often as i can...

That's pretty much the answer I got from Greenworks. However, the problem persists. The first node to start rendering gets the plugin - all others fail and come up with a dialogue asking for a license key.
I'm only using 4.2.2 (was not aware 4.3 was out), but I'm a little afraid of switching versions in the middle of a project. Suppose I will need to give that a try.
I installed the clients like I always do: just copied the important stuff from my C4D R9 folder: client.exe, plugins, resources, etc. Maybe I've left out an important folder or something.
I've not put net clients on the Macs yet - I presume I can use my 9.5 installer from Maxon on them then download the 9.6 updater and it will work (even though there will be no core C4D there)?
I usually have more time available to troubleshoot these kinds of things on my own, but I'm a little pressed for time to get this job done.
Thanks for sharing the knowledge.

i would copy the whole maxon folder - to make sure you aren't missing something. then delete the c4d app from the copies on the NET clients. (and server too if not needed)
and 4.2.2 works fine - so 4.3 won't be your solution most likely.
you are running NET right? that shouldn't look for a license - is there a file in the maxon folder that is the xfrog license? (not near my workstation to look and see at the moment) maybe if there is an xfrog license file in the NET installs it is trying to register as interactive mode - where if that was not there it would launch in just NET mode.

That makes sense. I will look into that. Due to the problem with xfrog, I ran just one client overnight (the one that is running the server also from my main C4D R9 install). However, when I came in and looked at the client log, there were all kind of xfrog errors in it. ("xfrog error:wrong number of parameters supplied" was in there about 200 times) The frames that rendered seem to be ok though, so I'm going to ignore the errors for now.

dann,
Thanks so much for taking the time to respond. It looks like I'm back in the groove with netrender.

Hey man,
Did you plug in the other computers?
Perhaps they are just shoeboxes that have "computer" written with a sharpie on the side.
Are you sure you're not just in an insane asylum. Dude, you might be.
Do your "co-workers" always wear white coats?
Have a good night IB, I'll call you tommorrow and we'll talk about trolls or wiggly 2d plant things.
