Throughout history there have been many hordes. Whether the Golden Horde of Mongolian history or the green-skinned Horde of WarCraft lore, everyone agrees: the word horde looks mighty strange if you write it too many times. They also agree that hordes are AWESOME.

For this challenge, create a hordesman/woman/beast. Create a character that would fit perfectly among a thousand others just like it, running across a plain waving weapons in the air and screaming. I'm setting a wide range for polycounts and textures sizes, so you can think in terms of RTS small or RPG big. Normal maps are allowed, but not mandated. Set your own target within the specifications and do your best.

The winner of the challenge (as judged by me. Don't worry, I've got a good eye) will win a slightly dusty copy of Dawn of War and DoW: Winter Assault. It's not the shiniest game out there but it's a lot of fun, and it'll come in handy if you're thinking of picking up the new expansion, Dark Crusade. Plus you get to pick the next contest.

Specs:

Polycount: 800-2500 tris.
Textures: Max pixel space 1x1024x1024 (color, specular, normal, alpha, diffuse, etc. allowed.)
Starts: Tuesday, November 28.
Ends: Sunday, December 10 at 11:00 PM EST.

Good luck and have fun.

hmmmm a new MGAC :D
Pitifully i did never make any characters at all. Lets see if I can do it (in time) ;). Standard question:
"Max 1x1024x1024 (color, specular, normal, alpha, diffuse, etc. allowed.)" means you can do 1x512 color + 1x512 specular + 1x512 alpha + 1x512 bump for example? Also whats the difference between a color and a diffuse map? Do I sound rather noobish?

That's exactly right - only one 1024x1024 texture is permitted. How you divide that texture up is up to you. You could do a 1024x512 color and 1024x512 normal map, for example.

As for your other question... diffuse maps deal with light absorption. This can be a confusing topic because 3ds max calls color maps diffuse maps. Diffuse maps are different, though. Here's a tutorial explaining their use (http://www.noir.org/tutorials/Sama/PowerOfDiffuse/powerofdeftut.html).

Hot damn! A new MGAC and it's a GREAT idea! Methinks I'll be doing a creepy crawly "The Darkness" sort of gobliny-dood. I really hope to enter and finish this one, but I've got very little time.. This sounds too fun to pass up though.. and a prize too!? Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeet! :applause:

Well maybe i will leave the last MGAC and start with this one. Im not a character 3d artist, mainly 2d, but i cancertainly try my best! :)

im snowed in these days so I can find the time to create something! :D

That's correct. However, the original game and expansion are required to play against the original factions online. That is, with just Dark Crusade you can only play with/against Tau and Necrons in multiplayer. It's a bit lame in my opinion since you can still play against the originals in offline skirmishes, but at least DOW/WA still have some use.

Too bad i dont do characters:( besides even if i did i would have to rig them to give them a nice pose and i dont even know how to do that so im gonna let this one slide as well

eirenicon
12-01-2006, 05:20 PM
There's no need to rig characters, and even if there was you could just pose the model by hand. Come on people! At this point all you have to do to win is finish a model, any model, even if it sucks! I'm sure the Horde of highly tesselated matte green blocks would make a convincing entry.

I'm working on one. I have very little free time, but I've got my character front and side view done and I plan to begin modeling tonight! I'm excited about this and I hope I'm able to finish. I'D LOVE SOME COMPETITION, though.. ;)

I'm trying to decide whether to post my concepts or just post them when I complete the model..

Just a small question to light absorbation... why in grey-tones? Shouldnt it be in color? I mean ligth is not one color. Its... all colors. So it should be a color map.

btw. i think its a very nice idea to give away a small price! I hope this motivates more ppl to join. I allways watch these MGAC threads!

yea, it would be cool if every winner (new challenge started) gave a very little price, like a old game or a dvd.

lol winner recieves a price from the previous winner, and the current winner is expected to give a free price. Cool trade :D

Agreed!

Well, here's my concept. I'm trying to keep him pretty generic (so the model can be accentuated by accessories and not all of them would look the same). I made a fat version but decided on the other one.. enjoy.

Ok, so I've been lurking on this thread long enough, here's the rough concept for mine:
http://jeunesang.com/images/horde_concept.jpg

He is part of The Abyss horde. Once a human, now he's more of an undead monster.
I started out with a goat-headed satyr, but ended up only keep the weapon from that design for this new one. I also designed this guy with a skull and antlers helmet, but it just wasn't looking right. Let me know what you think before I get to much further with the 3d stuff...currently I've blocked out everything. I want to leave myself plenty of time to make some good textures

Time to stop for the night and get some sleep, here's the model (almost) completed:

As you can see he's at 1280 tris, although it will be more once I fix the cape up and give him some hair.

Great to see some entries! I'm still working on mine. Modeling is now about 90% done, I just need to make head, hands, and feet. Then I'm on to UV unwrap and texture! I hope I finish! It's turning out pretty well if I do say so myself. I'll try post some screen captures tonight!

Robots aren't allowed, right? It needs to be something living?

eirenicon
12-04-2006, 08:45 PM
Robots/mechanoids are cool, so long as the character fits the general description of "horde". I would venture to suggest that a Star Wars battledroid or a BSG Cylon does not belong in a horde (more of an army), where as a WH40K Necron would be okay (because of the whole lots of evil darkness aspect). Use your own judgement.

Ghostscape, I like the mech, it reminds me a little bit of the Vulture Mech from Battletech (MechWarrior). What kinda scale are you using for it? Is it big enough for a person to ride in, or about the size of a person? Keep up the good!

I'll post an update to mine in a little while

It's going to be person sized - If I get enough time I'd like to make a human character to fight them.

Finished the model at 1500 triangles.

Now I just need to unwrap this, make up a quickie highpoly, and then texture it up.

I feel foolish but not at the same time. You see I am quite proud of this accomplishment, it being my first character player model, as well as i successfully used my new zbrush normal mapping powers :). The foolish part is that I read Polycount: 800-2500, not Polycount: 800-2500 tris.

My model is 2261 polygons and 4290 triangles. so I wouldnt doubt if i were disqualified for this. Otherwise here is what i have done so far.

I created a concept for the idea as well as a modeling template. Then modeled the low poly. Then made high poly models for creating normal maps. then started texturing. I changed the geometry on the fly.

wow ReK0!

that's impressive for a first model.

I have some suggestions (besides the polycount thing):

More color variation in the texture. The concept is rockin' but the final looks kinda bland color wise. I like the almost iradescent skin in the concept
The upper body looks a lot heavier in the final model. I would keep it the size it is in the concept unless you want to beef up the legs by adding larger muscles there.
There's a lot of black on the texture map, which means you could be making more out of the UV map. Try a tighter arrangement for higher resolution.
It looks like your texture is 1024x1024, which I'd assume is the same for your normal map. If I understand correctly the competition was going for 1024x1024 total pixel area for all texture maps. That means you would need to do something like 2 512x512's or 2 1024x512's. One is the texture and one is the normal map
That being said, I think it's a fantastic first model. Work on some of those things, perhaps don't worry about the texture and poly resolutions and just tuck this in your portfolio instead. This is already a good portfolio piece, but it will be outstanding if you make some improvements so it looks more like the concept.

Thank you Living the dream. First player model :)

Some great comments indeed. The texture map is unfinished, I sort of threw it together, but yes i need more color variation. I think i will be looking at reptiles and see how there colors change and where.

Ya I could easily do 2 512x512 maps instead. that would work :) I guess i didnt understand compeltely.

I used pelt mapping on him and did what i could :) I need to check out some other character uvmaps and see how they are made efficiently and how i could do mine the same.

again thanx! :)

cool challenge. I decided to take a break from my other model today and pump a monster out. Did a quick doodle for a concept, and modeled the highpoly first. I'm currently building the low poly around it, and I hope to be all done by tomorrow. Probably still gonna fix a few things on highpoly, but heres what i got so far.

I really wasn't planning on entering the contest but, I all of a suddenly got intrested and started modelling yesterday. It's based on that guy in the armor on the first page, because it looks cool. It's 824 tris and has a 512 color, diffuse, bump and spec map. I think the textures still need some more time to cook but I'm going to be out of that for a while. Took me roughly 13 hours, not sure if thats good or bad.

cool idea ghostscape. I think you should have played with the texture more. the flags are a nice touch but there is no US style markings on the robot itself. It would be better, if they intentionally put the flags on it, that they would include more traditional colors.

I think you should revamp the colors on it including the lighting and makeup a flag. the US wont see robots like that for a long time if at all. Japan or Korea would have been my guess. THey will have bots like that much sooner.
