http://www.imageafter.com/ - Thousands of textures and images, ALL are 1600x1200.

http://www.mayang.com/textures/ - Another great site with high res textures.

http://draves.org/flame/ - Cosmic fractal flames, may be useful to some.

Here is my contribution:

Not exactly photo realistic, but IMHO very nice nevertheless.

One thing to be aware of is most of these "free" texture sites mention the limitation of not using the texture for commercial purposes... meaning you can use them for personal work, but not for anything you get paid for (illustrations, game art, commercials, films, etc.).

As long as you don't distribute and make money it's OK. Still, if you use them for 3D renderings, it doesn't really matter if they're "free" or not... or am I wrong? :hmm:

if you give credit where credit is due, and don't sell them...you should be fine

Exactly. For personal use only, although when you're making a portfolio piece it kind of counts as a sellable item, since you're selling your skills to someone, but people generally let that float on by. I'm just saying you shouldn't expect to be able to use most of these textures on paying gigs, unless you don't mind possibly getting slapped for it later.

One rule of thumb I've learned is that if you change the texture enough that it is unrecognizable by the original creator, then you're safe to use it for work. But if the original artist can trace part of your finished piece back to their own art, then you should watch your back.

Dunno if this site was linked or not, but the textures "may be used for both personal and commercial applications."
