Hi there,

During the lead-up to the release of the Darren Aronovsky film, 'The Fountain,' I contacted 'Intelligent Creatures', the high-end VFX studio in Toronto to detail their work for the film.

Although 'The Fountain' is not a massive CG film, the effects that assist the story are truly enormous visually. I will most likely be covering the work done by other studios on this film, at a later stage.

Click the image and comments are welcome.

Hi all,

The Stanley Kubrick reference was to his film '2001: A Space Odessy'. '...a leaf from the Stanley Kubrick book...' was referring to the non-CG, and mostly in-camera special effects shown in that 1969 film, that, even over time, stand up to the scrutiny of discerning observers.

'The Fountain', I have read, is also one of these rare films. Darren Aronovsky wanted to use minimal CG work. That 2% which is there, is presented perfectly.

I would love to see a feature of the work done by Mathieu Raynault. His work on the Mayan temple looked really great!

I didn't do any work on the Fountain but I saw at the Toronto Film Festive. Vissualy stunning! Great work IC!

Good reference - I definately feel Aronovsky has the potential to be the next Kubrick, he is IMO the most promising young director at the moment.

Great article though, thanks for it! :thumbsup:

Huh? is it me or 3 of the shots featured in this article were done by Mokko studio(in Montreal)and not Intelligent Creatures?

I at least know Mathieu Raynault and Danny Levesque worked on that big tree shot.

Nazgul (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=560) vbmenu_register("postmenu_4036162", true);

The 3 shots from MOKKO STUDIO are The top shot (Hugh Jackman walking to the tree), The Maya battle and the Maya Temple. Key Artists were Alain Lachance, Mathieu Raynault, Danny Levesque and Charles Richer.

best!

Hi,

Here's another 'Fountain' article focused more on the production (pretty harrowing story really) and how Aronofsky didn't want to use CG at all in the beginning..

For those of you who haven't yet seen it - it's a very love it or hate it movie. I loved it, family members (who are very uncritical of films) hated it. It's extremely abstract, like 2001. I won't say too much for fear of spoiling.

But anyone should agree that it is visually one of the most amazing films ever made - so I would expect everyone here to at least enjoy that part. I am so happy that it is being made in the era of HD-DVD and Bluray; standard DVD would just not do it justice. Congratulations on the visuals.

i was dissapointed with the story: it seemed not complete or not worked out, unlike his previous films. i liked the detail of aronofsky's directing (non polished actors... "honest" scenes.. the bathtub seemed particularly personal)
i liked the effects (although .. in some interview the director claimed he did it without cg.. http://www.avclub.com/content/node/55490 .. at the bottom... which was upsetting since many cg artists worked on the film and such claims are disrespectful .. i think).
i hope his next movie will be better;
