View Full Version : Custom toolbar with most used tools : Possible?
saiko 11-28-2006, 06:39 AM Is it possible to make a toolbar in Rhino with all the most used tools?
It would be really useful as one the most used tools could be put together leaving all the unwanted ones.

You mean automatically or manually? I don't know about automatically, but slowly I'm doing that manually. I created a toolbar and started adding the tools that I usually use, and once I get all the tools out of say- the control point curve flyout, I delete the button.

What do u mean by 'manually'?
Could you please give me some more idea about how do u do it?
Is it possible to drag and drop tools to a new tool bar?

Go under tools>toolbar layout>toolbar>New>set the size of the buttons you would like and click ok. You'll get a little blank box. as far as I know, to add toolbuttons, have to copy them from all the little buttons that are already there. I don't know if you can copy them from the menus at the top.
So lets say you want to copy interpolate curve to your new toolbar. Hold the control point curve button until the flyout shows containing the other curve buttons. Click the top margin of that box and drag/rip it out. This seems to make it so that it doesnt automatically close when you press any button on the keyboard. hold ctrl and click and drag the button you want to copy over to the new toolbar. now you have you have your first tool. Do this for all the other tools you want. Once your done and you don't want to see any of the non-relevant toolbuttons, you can delete them. Do that by holding shift and click and drag the button you want to delete to the viewport till you see a red x and release. It should ask you if you are sure you want to delete it, click yes if you want.
before deleting anything make sure to save your existing toolbar just in case you make a mistake.

Well, you can even make some new commands and put it in a new toolbar. For me this thing of making new tools and toolbars is perfectly done in Rhino. Making of a new toolbar and alias is nicely explained in a help file. Shortly explained : make new toolbar, add button(s), Shift-RMB click on a newly created button. At opened window (which is easy to understand) in the left field you paste (or type) commands for LMB and on right side for RMB. You can even create icons, in built-in editor, insert tooltips, link wiht external toolbar, assign macros to buttons etc .... You can use command history to copy command and then paste it to LMB or RMB field. Find some useful info and some nice toolbars at RhinoWiki. Oooh so it is possible :) , Ill hafto that try that out ...but im wondering wouldnt this make it difficult if you share a machine with someone else or change computers often/upgrade?
Rhino saves a copy of the default layout but does anyone know where that location is?

You can create a new toolbar layout file (.tb) just for a single toolbar. This leaves the default toolbar layout untouched. Then simply load the toolbar layout file whenever you need it and unload it to revert back to default.
Holding CTRL or SHIFT while you mouse over a button will give you options for modifying the toolbars.

Tools>toolbar layout>file>open or save.
If you wanted to do a manual backup of it, go to documents and settings>whichover folder your settings are in( my default is all users)>application data>Mcneel>rhinoceros>3.0> you'll see a bunch of files with tb extensions. those are you toolbar layouts.
There are also files with tb extensions in program files>rhinoceros 3.0>system.
This is the simpler route, but i'm not sure why there are 2 locations for them...when you save a toolbar it defaults to the top address though, so I'd use that just in case.

You should check out RhinoScript 101 in the Rhino Wiki:
http://en.wiki.mcneel.com/default.aspx/McNeel/RhinoScript101.html
With scripting you'll be able to automate a lot of those tedious tasks we all run into.
