I don't use MR so I could be totally off base, but I thought BOT meant Block Ordered Texture. I understand it's a mipmapped texture format that loads the textures in chunks as needed specificly so that you can use gigantic textures in your scene without having to keep them all loaded at once. Sounds like it would be the solution to this problem.

Unfortunately though it doesn't look like MR for Maya supports BOT's yet, but I did find this in their FAQ.

Do Block Ordered Textures or BOT files work in Mental Ray for Maya?

No, they are currently not supported, but mental ray for maya does have a similar function called Memory Mapped Textures. You create them by using the imf_copy utility (the syntax would be <imf_copy –p inimage outimage>.) Executing this will turn your image file into a filtered (similar to mipmap) .map file. Please be aware that when you remap the new .map files to the shader’s image field, they will not show up in Maya’s interactive shader node presentation, but will still be renderable by Mental Ray for Maya.

Hey.. I had a similar problem for using mental ray with GI and FG..it would crash as soon as i started to render.. the only solution was to batch render(even if its a single frame) AND BE SURE TO SAVE IT IN AN IMAGE FOLDER OR IT WILL RENDER IT AS A SCENE.:surprised

Hi tierA,
Maybe a silly question, but how do you batch render a scene!

Cheers,
WT.

Render->Batch Render

or it can be done from the command prompt

from the help files

" * At the command prompt, type:

Render <options> <filename>

<filename> is (generally) a Maya ASCII or Maya Binary file, and <options> is one or more of the options."

The problem is Maya's poor connection to MR, not MR itself.

Wilson81,
If possible you can check chapter 12 in Maya Fundamentals book for a lot more info.
