Ok here are my questions, the first one is about bump maps and lighting. it seems whenever i light my scene in maya all my bump maps aren't shown. But when i use no lights the bump maps look fantastic. Does anyone know why this might be happening?
Another one of my questions is does anyone know where there are some good lighting tutorials, i suck at lighting so much.
And finally my last question. Lets say i have a cube, and i extrude one of the faces 3 or 4 times. After i'm down extruding when i smooth polygons, i get really big dents right where i pulled out the smoothed face. If you don't understand what i mean i can post some images to clear it up. Thanks.

maybe describe your problems more in depth - i really have no clue - i'd say without light you will get a black frame - maya creates a default light for you if your scene doesn't have one - but that's just a light like any other light you would create - that doesn't make sense

lighting tutorials -> browse the big fat sticky tutorial thread, http://google.com (lighting is not really application specific)

Hello friend, for then bump maps that is really wierd. but for then dent things I think I had just that very same problem.
try going into the smooth node and change the smooth type or something(it is the option at the top if your in the channel box)
well change it from a linear thing to an exponential type o thing.
that should fix up those dents or you can just play with the "clean polly" tool from the short pollygons menu.

select all of the delete whatevers at the bottom when in the clean polly tools options.
