View Full Version : message "Insufficient memory to read file. Quitting Maya" PLEASE HELP ME!
hopper2k 02-12-2003, 02:00 PM I'm scared right now. I have been working on an interior for quite some time and it's almost done, and when I tried opening it just now, I keep getting a message that says "Insufficent memory to read file. Quitting Maya." and Maya will close. This happens on all the computers in the lab I'm in, and I was working in here yesterday and it was fine. Maya opens up other files I have with no problem, but not this one. I don't see what the problem is, the file is only 5mb. Does anyone else know what this message means, and what the problem is? I really hope this file isn't corrupt or anything, since I have this same exact file backed up, so if it is corrupt, then the backed up file is too! Please help, thanks.

save early, save often, save in versions... just as a tip ahead to prevent stuff like that happening..
- have you saved your file as .ma or .mb?
- what is IN the file.. 8 megs does not sound a lot but that depends on what you do.
- do you use very huge texture maps?
(if so: try renaming your sourceimages folder to something else that maya can not find them and try reopening)
- increase the swap partition of windows
hope you succeed
cheers

Well I've never seen that message before: normally Maya just throws a memory exception and drops out.
How much RAM have the computers got that you are trying to open the file on? Are there any particles in the scene? Cloth? Sounds very strange indeed.
Do you know anyone with a copy of Maya and a shedload of RAM?

Sorry that it's taken me so long to reply. I believe it is a .mb file. In the file, is just a small living room, with furniture like couches, chairs, picture frames, plants, etc. My texture maps shouldn't be THAT big, I believe they are around 320 x 240, if even that big. I don't know what you mean by the "swap partition of windows."
The amount of RAM the computers have that I am working on have about 550 mb. There are no particles or cloth in the scene. I still can't get the file to open and have had some friends do all they can to try and get it open and nothing's happened. I had all my furniture built in separate files that will open fine, so earlier today I just put all the furniture back in the room like it was, and started texturing again, and room is due well, technically, today (2-12-03). So when I get back to school in the morning I'm just going to get to texturing the rest of my models like crazy, and then there's the lighting that's still got to be done. Well, I'll start back up at 8 am, and class starts at 1:20 pm, so I may have to skip my philosophy class in order to get it done. I will prevai! I'll keep you updated and thanks for the advice.

PHEW! I began at 8am like I said and it's 1:20pm, and I just got done. I am saving a different version of my file almost every time I make a new change in my scene. Thanks for the help!
