For those of us who don't know how a 'shooting star' fx oughta look like, could you provide an example, a reference?

I dont see what the problem is, a shooting star is a big star which moves across the sky with lots of little stars behind it as its tail.

I hope that explains it, i dont think there is much need for a ref photo

Much clearer now(did it hurt?). Animate your big star and link particle emitter to it, give the smaller stars no or just a tiny gravity and motion, let them fade out after a while and use glow and streaks on the particles.

I have created shooting stars using Trapcode particular. You can use the built in particle effect but trapcode is much easier and there is www.trapcodepeople.net (http://www.trapcodepeople.net) this site has tons of AE files and presets that use trapcode plugins and are free to download . Odds are that someone has already created that effect and all you need to do is modify it.

i have a question about linking a particle emiter. How do I do it? I am able to link the layer, but that doesn't give the desired result.

also, i've had problems with drawing masks over particle layers. Just didn't seem to work.

Youc could use expressions for the particle emitter postion itself.
