I would recommend not to change the keys first...wait a bit. You will soon realize that they are perfectly placed for a fast worklow and you will rather want to change mayas keys afterwards.
it happend to me like that. :)

I am in the same boat. I really want to understand xsi but I dont get some of the keys.
1. Is "f12" the only way to maximize viewport? That seems like really out of place.
2. Why is orbit "o". Again this seems to be way out of the way.
I am open to new layouts and ideas but can someone explain why these are where they are?
Thanks
1. Is "f12" the only way to maximize viewport? That seems like really out of place.
You can also LMB on the Top-Right Most button in the viewport. RMB for other options.
2. Why is orbit "o". Again this seems to be way out of the way.
You can also orbit w/ "s". LMB to Track, MMB to Dolly, RMB to Orbit. I only Use "o" when I need to do a very refined specific orbit on an axis.
Make a habit of reading the L ( ) M ( ) R ( ) info in the information bar.

1. I agree that the "maximize viewport"-key is way off. I assigned it to "tab". Works great.
2. And, yes, use the "s"-key for navigation.

Lots of Maya converts map Alt-Spacebar to Maximize/Mininmize viewports, since it is so much like the standard maya key.
I had the same problem, But once xsi's conkerd mayas poly tools i didnt open maya for one month and got use to xsi.
I pretend im playing counter strike middle finger on s.
Now im use to it. I hate maya now. I just wish i could select a face pointing down from the side view. :) im sure theres a way just havnt figured it out. dont need it that bad but would like it.

I just logged on to post the same question hehe.
I just started with XSI today after looking at some work by a friend and seeing how well it handles polys.
As a maya user I am having a bit*& of a time getting used to the UI but hopefully I will get it down. I might drop the projects I'm doing in maya at the moment and dedicate time just to geting the hang of this program workflow whise, because I know if I keep using maya at the same time it will be much harder to do so.
I've been looking for the alternate mouse mapping but cant find it, I'll go look some more...
Been using XSI for a whole humm 2 hours now Hehe.
Edit: Question, I tried to do a simple shade on a sphere but is not working as metntioned in the tutorial....... =/ .....some help please
