Hey all

I was trying to get an idea of how to achieve a body heat/seeking sensing effect for an animation.

I was thinking of applying a procedural texture but i 'm not sure it's the way to go.

Any help please, i hope to not have to use any commercial plugins as it is really for like 20 seconds.

Here is a pic of what i'm trying to describe it's as if you are looking through Predators mask.

Please give us a hand, later

I should also mention that i'm using max and combustion.

Thanx

looks like post production to me

Erm before my hollow man dvd mysteriously disapeared at work a while ago I think they explained how they did this in the extra features...

Basically you're either going to have to hand paint it (like how they did it in predator) or else apply some varying photoshop filters to it to posterize and breakdown the colours and crank them up to varying degrees.

I made a script in painter 3 (or 4?) maybe four years ago that did this, although that was a long time ago. But basically photoshop is your best bet, make an action file that'll do it to every frame of your animation sequence.

hope that helps at least point you in the right direction,

Allan McKay

Hey Allan

Thanx for responding to my pm. I tried and it looks really good for a two minute bash at it.

Can any one point out any irregularities or what i should improve.

here is my test

well, i'd say try making it look like it's a heat thing like in predator. right now it just looks like a rainbow. the center parts of the body would be warm and colder going out. there's alot of stuff from that vid anyway that wouldn't really be that differential

So would you say i have too many colors? i'm also not sure as i can't really remember what it is supposed to look like any way.

Guess i'll have to rent it.

well the amount of colors is fine. it's just where it's placed. and i'm guessing you just applied a filter so you're really not goign to get a predator effect out of that. if you want it to look the best it'll be manually :surprised

Well, actually what i did is apply a gradient map with an action to each frame of the clip. That way i was able to move the warm colors to the middle and the colder ones to the edges.

On second thought it doesn't look too bad as there will be colder parts on the face and body any ways else all will be red.

Digieffects DELIRIUM has this FX as AfterFX compatible plugin. ;) Combustion can use this plugin.
 :)

Thanx Deepray for the tip. Not sure the price but i doubt i'll be able to purchase it now, maybe they have time limited trial version.

It also feels cheap as an effect now if there is a plugin like that :p

Have you tried playing with maps on an object (to manipulate attributes like surface color, reflectivity/refraction, self-illumination, etc..) in concert with the Pseudo Color Exposure Control built into Max? If you set it to Luminance you should get a heat type of color banding effect. It reads how much light is being reflected off of the surface (depending on various surface properites like color, reflectivity, etc) with some fiddling I bet you could get something simliar to heat being radiating from the surface in terms of light reflecting of of it.

mh i think a falloff map could work pretty well on organic models

just use different colors on surfaces that are perpendicular or parallel to the viewing direction

see:

.. i've also attached the material, took me some 2 minutes...so it could be refined of course

basic heat vision material (http://www.k-dump.net/files/cgtalk/heat_vision.mat)

*update*

you could also use different materials for different objects, each with different colors, so for cold objects you'd naturally use something more blue/greenish

You may want to try adding a blur filter in photoshop to take some of the detail out, making the color splotches more vague. Add a glaussian blue after your other filters, play around with how much blur...

Then add a mosaic filter to make it look like it's made out of larger pixels.

Here's some mods I did for quick examples:

Good luck,

This is actually quite interesting to see ways people are going about tackling effects like this. Kinda cool to occasionally learn some neat tricks like this :)

Hey All,

googlo - not 100% sure what you are going on about, sorry, but it did sound interesting! i promise ;)

Fist - shot for the material, i'll give it a shot

Sledgeweb - that looks really good dude, the blur does the trick.

amckay - it's amazing what you can learn from the little peoploe hey :p

If any one has pictures i can use as reference i would appreciate them you can mail them to me if you like fred.dedeu@ddb.co.za

mhmh well i guess the problem with the above effect (shown in the mov) is that it's not really heat vision, it just assigns various (random) colors to different areas ?

Hey!, what about use vertex colors?

Hey Is-boset would you mind elaborating on the process please, not sure how to go about doing what you are talking about.

i think the only real way to make it perfect is to do it by hand in post production. but that's just my perfectionist side speakin'
