Hi folks : )

My intention with this thread is to create a combination of a diary and a sketchbook. From here on, this is where I will post my daily sketches and doodles, colortests and brushes.

The thing is, I'm desperately wanting to be a concept artist  (character/enivorment/storyboarding) and painting is something I've enjoyed since before I could walk or talk. Till recently, I studied graphic design, it was fun but I can't make a living out of it, one of the best parts of that education was the free time I got for my tablet. Developing in some way a sense for digital painting.

I've never been payed for doing what I do and so I got no experience with film or computer industry. The thing is I've never even searched for a job as a concept artist, I blame the combination of fear for not living up to the standards and rejection. :wip:

If anyone got tips on how to put together a solid portfolio, what it's important for a concept artist to know, colors or just want to drop a line' how big jerk I am, feel free to do :p

I think it's time to make it something more than a hobby. I'll add as much info as I can about
my progress.

I'll keep this thread going till I get a job and hopefully, others can learn from my trials and errors aswell.

This is the tools I got at the momemt,

Photoshop cs2
Wings 3d (a free 3d tool which I use to create placement boxes for silly perspectives)
Vacom tablet
Pen, Paper, Printer
Scanner
Digital camera

Alright,

It's abit past 2 in sweden and the day have just begun for me, I zzz alot.
I want to create atleast 1 interior and 1 exterior today. I made a brush aswell, which came out fairly nice, I'll add it to the edit of this post along with the images when they're done.

Exterior completed

Update, I called a art director at a gaming company today. Not to ask for a job but to ask for how many works a concept artist have to produce. He (it was a he) replied that it really depended on the quality of the work but usually anything between 2 and 20 , sometimes it might even be 2-3/week. I got a hard time producing 2 a day :) anyhow.. producing 20 sketches is very reasonable.. but 20 quality concepts is impossible.

Here's a piece i'd like to call the flying ship, trying to develop a better brush economy. The problem with me is that I start adding details when the picture's done and I've flipped it. that's why my sig is mirrored ;)

got a problem I'd like to get some help with; how do I save only 1 or two brushes?

Now I have to go buy some food for me cat..

Here's the latest addition, another rather fast work (as the others), a kind of heating room by the looks of it. Still i'd like to be more careful with my brushes not overusing strokes. I like the colors though.. I thought of desaturating it abit but they're so strong, I couldn't kill them!

I think i'll stick to the speedpaint, sketchy stuff. I like it most and it's a really calm technique to use. Haven't made any new brushes in a while. I'll go do that for the remainder of the day :p

Hi Wasker,

I think your work is really nice. Great colours and composition.

Im no expert but I feel that if you were to add a bit more detail to some of the images it would give the viewer more reason to get lost/swept up in the ideas. At the moment the images can be taken in quite quickly.

I realise you are going for the sketchy feel, mabye even just one or two detailed areas would add that chi-ching Im talking about.

Thanks Snape, I think you got a valid point adding one or more sharp areas of interest in the pictures. I forgot to post any pictures yesterday. Sorry, been too busy sketching all over the place, here's the best pic I've done today.

I haven't been slacking if that's what you think :p I still make 1-3 oics a day, but some of them just dont qualify as sketches and are therefore kept out of this thread. Did some anatomy studies yesterday. First time ever :p figured I probably ought to know some anatomy if I want to be a concept artist.

variation.
The composition is a bit wierd a centurion standing in the middle of a forest staring at nothing (or possible the tree in the left corner). I did a version with a snowman and a "...wtf?" comic bubble at the centurion but it kinda lost it's seriousness then. :D all tips and comments on how to improve techniques and such are appreciated.

Hi wasker! These are great! I really love the tree with the lights -- and I REALLY love the archway one, but I think the right archway is a little off on perspective -- but that one is just lovely :) Keep em coming! :)

wasker
12-16-2006, 11:45 PM
Thanks Runecaster! :)

Yeah, the middlepiece of the cathedralish interior is abit off.

here's a quickie I did, 35 min, more work to be done on it tomorrow. I want to give a hint of structure on the huuuge tree in the horizon.

Anything seems critically wrong?

What can be improved? Should I slize of any edges?

http://www.wasker.com/Snow2.png

Snape
12-19-2006, 06:52 PM
Love this piece!

The clever detail at the front gives it lots of depth.

How it makes me feel is that the composition is dragging my eyes to the man on the rock. Might be more satisfying if there was some more detail on the man (to give him a purpose when you get there). Also I love the way the colours in the distance work with the blue. Would the light cause a reflection in the water? Maybe the reflection could point at the man and also cause an edge of light around him or one side of him? Just an idea...

Great work anyway!

wasker
12-19-2006, 07:57 PM
Thanks, Snape

Good points about the reflections.. hmm gotta think of a purpose aswell. :D

I was abit, and still am, unsure about the composition. Perhaps I should slize of the left part to make the tree house/palace in the far distance more centered.

Snape
12-19-2006, 09:05 PM
I think the composition looks nice as it is but I do think the light around the tree palace could be a bit brighter and more saturated, again this could give more purpose to what the man is looking at. That together with the detail at the front would give leading lines right around the picture and keep your eyes moving which might ultimately keep the viewer interested for longer. Only my thoughts though (god knows where they come from!)

aldog

I'm loving the winter drawings

wasker
12-20-2006, 11:58 AM
Thanks Aldog, glad you liked them :)

Snape, yeah good suggestion, I'll make it brighter and increase the contrast to make it pop abit. After all, I want the tree palace to be the centerpiece and the man more of a complement or a detail.

I did this this morning, 3hs I would say. Maybe 3½ since the backs of eagles are tricky to paint.
Do you prefer it like this or should I flip it (it's flipped now, when I did it it was mirrored) or add more blue?

http://www.wasker.com/Fly!.png

Runecaster
12-20-2006, 02:41 PM
I really really like what you've been doing lately!

This one with the eagle makes my eyes jagg all over the place -- maybe crop out the rock on the right or move the center tower of rock somewhere more visually adhesive? I dunno - It's just fwooop to one section than another -- maybe tone down the white between everything?

wasker
12-20-2006, 03:46 PM
Thanks Runecaster :) yea, it turned out abit bright with all that fog/clouds. The cliff in the right corner is a complement to the eaglerider, you're right when you say it steals the attention of the other parts. I've tried removing the cliff but I just had more cloudy emptiness to fill the hole it left. I'll give it a try though, thanks for the input

I've lit the area up abit and added some hints of blue to its' base + reflections.

Better or worse?

http://www.wasker.com/Snow3.png

Snape
12-20-2006, 06:32 PM
Loving the eagle pic Wasker! Think I agree with Runcaster re the white. It would be nice if you could just make out what was behind the cloud in vague patches to join the whole thing up a bit although I appreciate the style you are going for and over all think its a beautifull piece. Especially for 3 1/2 hours work! In fact its one of my favourite pics on this thread.

Also yes the brighter light in the tree palace pic does make it more centre of attention and draws my eyes round to finish on it nicely.

Death to silly elves :scream: I had fun doing the orc picture, Runecaster.
On a second glance I think it kinda looks like as if he was caught peeing in public, surprised and turning away from the viewer. Except for the sword, head and the arrows in his back. :p

I gave the eagle picture another try, revealing more mountains and making the clouds somewhat more saturated. Repositioned the center mountain to take advantage of the rule of thirds. The complement foreground mountain is gone.

Hey there, it's fun watching you improve! I'd love to see you do some greyscale stuff though, practice those values, you tend to oversaturate a bit at times, colors are fun but not at the expense of values. :D Keep up the good work!

P.S-- I really must recommend my friend rebecca's anatomy forum here:

Paperclip : Thanks, Paperclip! I admit I haven't been paying anatomy much interest.. ever :p Which is something I regret today.
I'll start doing some work at some of the threads over at Rebeccas part of the forum for further character development.

Hi again... thought i'd try this overdrawing and correction stuff too.... i hope u dont mind and i hope my suggestions are correct...

the first thing i can say is the nec should be a little bit thicker.. and the scalp/bone thingie is too thin..and i belive that the nose should be itsy bitsy longer and the are between the nose and the mouth should be wider.

I hope im not intruding your privacy by invading your pic with my red line...bit scary for me to do so cos im not sure when its ok and when it isnt... (anyways thought that it may help)

So i hope it helps...:)

Arlekin
12-29-2006, 09:51 PM
and one other thing....

how long have you been doing digital stuff (or any art related stuff) just curious...
For me its lets say 4 years total (web and interface design) and started digital painting and first attempts on mattepaintings 6 monts ago....i want to to my final piece for graduating as a matte or digital painting...

:)

wasker
12-29-2006, 10:11 PM
Thanks for the crits Arkelin :) I don't mind you overpainting the pictures, I wish more people would do it. I see what you mean, this is probably why I should pay more attention to the anatomy forums at cg-talk :D I'll fix the flaws once I am done with my 3rd tree house picture (tomorrow probably)

How long I've been painting digitally? hmm.. there are two answers.. I have probably been using photoshop to correct photographies (some web and interface aswell actually) and do "really really" flashy space enviros and pointless desktops which I thought was the real deal for 5 years or so. Painting the stuff I do in this thread.. maybe 3/4 year. Last summer I had some time of and started coloring lineworks ( I don't do lineworks anymore) and was aiming for hyper realism, ie Linda Bergqvist and the likes. And perhaps one day in the distant future I would have been averagly good at producing those kind of pictures but I abandoned the idea of becoming as good as the people I admired and started doing speedpaints and just trying to develop something I can identify as 'me'.

I won't re-read this and correct any typos/spelling errors :p so just deal with it :bounce:

Edit1: I just couldn't let it say 'Gow long Iäve been paining digitally?'

Arlekin
12-29-2006, 10:18 PM
i guess its a bretty much the same for me.. i have done some flashy websites and astronomical space pics myself...and its also pretty much speedies for me...
The current thing im trying to achive is to brake into finished and detailed level...

About the anatomy i think the first thing that would help a lot is an anatomy book on your desk... something you could touch with your own hands...and look for refrence when doing something...(for proportions and such)

Anatomy forum is also a good idea...

wasker
12-30-2006, 01:12 AM
ya. I just haven't found any good book yet, I only got 1 anatomy book but the author seems to have forgotten half the muscles and bones on his desk.

started on the tree house using a couple o' refs. Still need some ideas for objects in the foreground/background.
Any suggestions or favorites which would be cool to see/fit this enviro.
I was thinking of a frozen river of some sort (there's a water wheel on the house's side), here's what I could think of in 3 in the morning, getting hungry, feel like having a early breakfast/late evening tea... :buttrock:

A merchant (band of horses probably, carrying some goods, ie a caravan).
A warlord assaulting/returning to the tree house with his band of warriors of varying sizes (trolls/dwarves/humans/orcs and whatnot).
A cuddly fairy tale figure which will make everyone go awww.. it looks a bit Winnie the Pooish already so I guess it's not a far call.
Eagles/dragons/gryphons/chimeras/doombulls/wyverns/harpies/manticores/flying vessels (such as air ballons or crude helicopters) approaching the tree.
A giant carrying cattle (sheep or cows), wearing scavanged houses as clothing (a roof for hat and such) and hopefully not wielding a torn off tree as a walking stick..
A messenger in a hurry (mounted or on foot).
Mountains of epic proportions (bg).
Forests (bg, pine trees preferably to differ from the main tree which is obviously a leaf-kind of tree).
Fading sky and hills with silhouettes of houses (bg).
A sea (frozen, could be bg/foreground or both).
Icy talons which seem to have grown out of the ground. (foreground/bg or both).
A wooden/stone bridge (foreground/bg or both).
Rocks (there will probably be some of these peeking around no matter what).

wasker
12-30-2006, 03:59 PM
Perhaps something like this (eagles again).. I'm tempted to do the giant aswell but I cant imagine where he would fit in.

Abit like Howl's moving castle, a movie I am yet to see. Need to fix the colors aswell. But I'll save that till after dinner. I'm getting hungry.. pasta will do. Brb.

hi again... just dropping by again

So i have some thoughts on your current wip....

Idea is sweet and fairitale like....
...now some thoughts i think when you integrated the tree with the house a little bit more ..it would be a benefit... (waht i mean is that...it is supposed to be a treehouse? right... so i think if there was asome branches in front or around the house it would fuse the compositsion into one piece a little more...or maybe some roots coming through the island....and reaching into the air..

if you are intrested i can post scemathics tillustrate thoughts...

...otherwise...:D keep it up..

Alright I'm not sure what else I can do on this, crits are welcome (as usual ;) )

It took me about 5-6h and if I am to crit my own pictures (HERETIC!) I think it came out pretty well with its' antique colors.

I added a mast thing (I'm not quite sure what the english word for 'bogspröt' is so I'll just call it a mast.. I'm not even sure 'bogspröt' is the proper swedish word for it either) to the front to make the over all impression of the flying treehouse more of a boat.
I made up the asian signs on the banner poles instead of getting proper signs to avoid getting silly grammatical errors and whatnot on them.

By the way all the Treehouse pictures I have done recently were done for a competition over at the Gnomon workshop, the december challenge ends the last of december, it's 4:07 in Sweden but over in US it's still 2006, slowpokes, so I still got a few hours to fix details and such. :wip:

Today I got on shared 5th place in the gnomon workshop december challenge with my eagle picture! :D :applause: Which means I get to pick of any 2 dvds as my price. WASKER!

That last one, while yeah ok there are some anatomy issues with the guards, but who cares, look at the MOVEMENT! Excellent! :)

You know? I just bought ALL the Scott Roberston shading DVDs and the Concept Art to one hahah!

I haven't watched them yet, I'm afraid when I begin them I'll never surface and my family will starve/get stinky from unwashed clothes. :D

Anyway, lovely work - I plan to work on the whole 'dynamic' body stuff in the next couple years, I've got to get static people looking right!

Thanks Rune :>

Hehe, great minds think alike! :applause: I'll get the remainder of the dvds in a few months.

yeah the see there's some flaws in the anatomy now when you mention it I can see the guard to the left got extremly long arms :argh: and the one to the right is all hands!

anyways, 2hs on this one, painted with 1 rectangular brush I did tonite, the sky was painted with a round brush. 2 brushes in total must be a new personal record.

Edit1: omigosh, that's one helluwa bent wall.

The man behind the machine. Did a selfpotrait using a mirro today, took roughly 3hs because my model wouldnt sit still and while I was painting the the sun disappeared, constanly making the shadows and colors darker. I got quite alot of hair too but no brushes that would could do it satisfactory.

Edit1: btw, the 2 square reflections are the tool interface and the history+layers in photoshop. :)

Heyas Wasker :)

It looks like you do what I do when using a mirror -- sketch to the slant of how your hand lies on the tablet haha! I'd just do a vertical line down from the center of the eyes down to align everything -- also - horizontal lines from pupil to pupil, corner of eye to corner of eye, nostril end to nostril end and lip end to lip end to help with facial landmarks.

I don't execute this all with perfection or anything, but I've read a TON of Loomis lately about the construction of a head =D

Anyway, LOVE LOVE LOVE the eyeball on the last one. It looks amazing, truly. I see what Serena (CyborgJA) was telling me about the light coming through... beautiful!

Ah, good tips Runecaster :) , I'll redraw it when I'm out of ideas.

Tried out some values for a more advanced enviroment. I figured I would probably develop more if I spend more than 30min-2h on a picture :p

Here's a update on the value pic I posted a while ago, off to get a couple of hours sleep before I continue with it. I accidently saved it after I'd started detailing it when it was downsized to 1000x600 x_x

Lesson1: Check perpsective on your b/w picture before you slap colors and details on. I know I didnt :argh:

Lesson2: Don't click yes if you dont want to when asked; "Do you want to save changes done to xx.psd?"

haha you made me chuckle with the "lessons" :D

What do you mean about using those things in PS properly?

I'd just make a new adjustment layer - don't click the box if you want to adjust the WHOLE image and just mess around - since it's on a layer by itself, you can always mess with the layer blending modes (which really can fiddle with stuff) and of course opacity -- and if you don't like it, delete it!

hehe, yeah I got the basics of curves and levels but when I downloaded some speedies from other artists they seem to rely heavily on all that kind of stuff. After working with a image for a while I get blind to hues and saturation, which usually means I end up with either a monochrome picture or one with either a desaturated or a too saturated product. Very annoying.

the news are that I redid the whole image today from another angle, showing more of the actual staircase. It was pretty easy since I only had to colorpick my old image. I found out a new way of applying details such as litter on the ground ( I bet everyone all ready know of it). Start up a new document and paint whatever litter you want as if viewed straight from above. I did a rectangle custombrush and some other rectangular blocks which are supposed to look like random pages from newspapers, I gave it a large scatter and a count of 5. Then went berserk on the empty area in a new layer. Select all and drag it over to the orignal painting and skew it till it fits the perspective. Use a soft edged eraser to remove surplus litter or to add atmosphere.

Anyways to relax my brain a little I did this jungle speedie. Painting vegetation can be really soothing to the mind. ~1h

Since it's past 4 in the morning yet again, it's probably time for me to get the mandatory sleep.

Here's an update on the pic. I re-did it totally, setting perspective right and remembering to save it in the right size.

No, I didn't know about the litter idea, but that's a great idea! I'm so dumb sometimes, I try to paint everything manually :P

I actually wonder about the ceiling in the last one, it looks way too yanked up.. dunno how to explain it. The lighting is gorgeous however... and the forest is /lovely/, keep em coming, despite sleep! :D hehe

Hmm, yes the ceiling is way off, looks like it's going upwards. I better fix it.

I've been cultural today and was on a theatre, watched 'Dead Man Walking'. It was pretty neat.

This picture was pretty fun to do, I used ALOT of custombrushes which I've done myself or obtained from other artists (M@'s and Andrew Jones' in this one)

Oh, pity the poor for today is a day of grief  My dearest possesion and companion through many harsh nights and bleak days died a little today. My Wacom's ill and have by no apparent reason lost several functions along with some buttons that just wont work. Strangely enough the pen (just 1 button on the pen works) and the pressure still works though.

I completely trashed my apartment looking for the warranty and finally found it in a box. The warranty is fortunately for 2 years, so I still got a year to go with it.

Here's a speedie for today, 1½h on a broken wacom

Argh more bad news, the stores says it's going to take "several weeks" to get a new one/repair whatever's wrong with my Wacom. And I entered the Thunderdome competition the day before yesterday x_x

I wonder if I can get any compensation from the Wacom company. I mean, taking the brush from an artist is like robbing a singer of her voice.

Anyway. that means I got slightely less than a month to learn anatomy and painting with oils.. hmm I wonder how custom brushes work in real life. Must be something like those potato stamps you used to make when you were a kid :) Gorgeous!
