View Full Version : Photorealism? How?
erikals 02-12-2003, 07:56 AM Hi,
I was trying to achive a photorealistic render, but didn't quite make it. Any ideas on how I can improve the render. (This is actually retouched a little in Photoshop). I don't want to add to much dirt to it, cause it's brand new.
All crits are welcome,
Erik

Well two obvious things are that the edges are far too sharp, even if maybe the edges on the clock you're looking at are sharp, they probably aren't that sharp, and if they are, well, it just doesnt look right in the computer. There is a saying that film often has to be "more real than real", since we have come to expect certain things.
Also, it looks like the shader you used for the clock itself is just a straight color. There is nothing in life that is one pure color, not even mixed paint necessary. Add a bit of variation to it, subtle-like, and maybe a small bump map, which you likely wouldnt be able to see the bump from this far away but just the work going into that can give it a little extra flare. Also, add bit of a dirt map to your specularity channel to help vary it a little. Also, it looks like the plastic is too dull, perhaps it needs a little more of a highlight.
Other than that, you probably want to create some variation in your background through lighting, I light to use a main light that is ever so slightly yellow, and fill and key lights that are ever so slightly blue. This is similar to the way they often light things for film. You may also want to composite this into a background of build a background in order to achieve a more realistic image.
Hope all this helps.

Thanks WhiteRabbit.obj
I will test it later today. Many good points you gave me that I didn't think of. Arigato :)
Yeah, I know, I was afraid too make the edges too much rounded, but after the render I see what you mean.
More bump-maps and more "imperfectionizm" is on the way.
Could it also be that other render-engines are better? I've seen a lot of Photo-realistic renders done in Brazil that are quite good.

If you are using lightwave there is a site: http://www.niklasindustries.com/tutorials/tut_ibl.htm
I have done some of the tutorials on here and I found some amazing lighting results with this particular tutorial..the whole site is great. Just try it with an off-white background image and see what you get.
If you are not using lightwave then I am just talking rubbish and you may disregard my existence on this planet!!
happy rendering:thumbsup:

Yes, Lightwave it is
Cool tutorial, I'll try that. I also noticed I had forgotten to adjust "ambient lighting" which is a no-no!
