From the brand new Blender software website @ http://www.blender3d.org:

A great achievement for all volunteers, and an important milestone; the first actual open source release! Blender 2.26 includes new features, bug fixes, and is ready for further development by the community. Although not all 2.25 functionality has been restored - the game engine is temporally disabled - this version will be the new reference for users to file bug reports and to provide us feedback on. For a list of new features and bugs fixed, check the release notes (http://download.blender.org/release/blender2.26/release_226.txt).

Here you can download Blender 2.26 (http://www.blender3d.org/Download) for all platforms.

Good for them

At least they have a legal free option out there for some people to learn on.

Good news for us Blender users and the world of 3d artist and developers. Now we own our 3d software tools. 3d developers need not rely on a software company anymore. We make the software, we can freely use the software, we control it's future.

Now 3d developement can be like html developement and java dev. Who knows what's next for the 3d software industry? Watch us Blender users and developers to find that out.

My cynical side can't help but wonder how many good developers are actually working on this project. I imagine progress is going to be very slow, and it will be difficult for the core dev team to sort out the good, professional code from the more amateur (albeit enthusiastic) "patches".

For me the developers that post updates at Blender.org words are the rule. What they say, they will do. Even if it takes them three months to develope an update we can live with that. The Blender productions just keep on going and new Python based tools keep on coming out. We have a new powerful python script-to renderer out called YafRay. And it's the lastet hot Blender tool. When we get the new Blender Dynamics engine built we will have fluid, particle, hair and other basic dynamic tools that xsi and maya users use and beyond. We ain't complaining. Who sets the limits to our imaginations and our pc's now! Hehehehehehe!
