Hello, everyone. This is my first challenge post, sorta. I have so far thought of designing a character that was a bit more amphibious than a dwarf or an elf. I was thinking that the idea would be a race that lives in underwater caves near to where mountains meet the sea. Or some jazz like that.

I see these guys as people who might enjoy kicking the crap out of goblins that are trying to take over their subterranian turf...

These are my refs...

And lastly I have an early screenshot... What do you think, I have gone farther since, but as of now more screenshots are "coming soon"...

Looks like good concept to me. As for model, try to make it more detailed than the sketch;)

although, I am not the best artist, or one to get many replies I have done some more work and have a non-textured head. I have made part of the torso and will start work on the armor shortly...

I'm working feverishly, although no one still seems to care enough to reply... Here's a shot the head with low poly armor...

I wonder what anyone thinks would be the best color scheme to make the head and hair, these were just two random colors...

Just so you all who read this know... I don't think I'll win this contest, but if it means anything I'm only 17 and never taking a class in this sort of thing...

I hear ya. Nobody seems to care sometimes. Many of the good 3D artists are helping each other get better, but the some of us aren't get any help. c'est la vie i guess.

For you, i'd suggest you just add as much detail as much as possible. Make sure the detail you add makes sense and is "realistic".

Shen,

Not sure if you are already doing so, but one good thing to think about is to get some good reference pictures of what you want to build. dont look just strictly at your original drawing and model purely on that. look at the kind of armor and creature that you admire, study it very carefully and then model like crazy. Do that and you will definitely get better. nobody in this forum can make you better, only you can do that. =)

hope that helps. oh, and try to learn as much as you can from the artists here. you can even ask them directly about things you need help with. they may not answer, but i know some will. i love this site.

my one cent.

It's hard to give much advice in this thread, because so far your model is looking very much like your original sketch :)

However, if I may comment on your concept, in all honesty I'm not sure if it really suits Middle Earth... It just seems a bit too Japanese video gameish to be an inhabitant of Middle Earth... Just my opinion

However, you could perhaps make it more suitable by making it less cartoonish, because at the moment there is something about it that is very cartoony. Maybe try adding some more details to it, such as more muscle definition, and more definition to its face. Perhaps that would make it appear more believable ;)

thanks to all who responded, hope I didn't sound like a whining ignorant little kid. This was my last render... two days ago.

It's really depressing because the material I used for the armor was one I got off an online tutorial and alterd a little bit. For some reason after I saved the file it was corrupted. Alas, whenever I try to open it it says, "file open failed!" No fun at all... I tried deleteing the texture from all files... yada yada, but no change... I'm afraid I will not be able to finish the model for the contest or good... but hey, the second time it can only get better...

Thanks again!
