Well, well...I see lerpiedood has started to model yet another female head. Yes, he is talking about himself in the 3rd person, spending most of your time indoors modeling can make on go a wee bit crazy.

This will only be my second finished head, when I finish it, which I will do. It is modeled in LW using Subdivision surfaces. this only took me about 2 1/2 hours to model. My technique was to model a rough polygon structure of the head poly by poly, getting an idea of the edgeloop flow, then detailing that in, in the same way one does the form-down technique, otherwise known as Box modeling. Why didn't I just model the whole thing starting from a simple box? Well, I'm not too good with starting with a box, and model better starting with polys, I also do not see the topology of the head fitting into a box. As you can, or can't see, I still have alot of things to do to this model; I need to model the tear ducts, inner nostril ring, inner mouth, teeth, tonque, eyelashes, eyebrows, hair, and eventually a Body. I also need to texture her. I would like some advice on modeling the teeth and tear ducts. I could do some real simple tear ducts but I want to model some nice realistic ones. The teeth, I don't know exactly how to model those, I guess I sortof model the gums and a bunch of teeth to go into them. I plan on making the hair polygonal.

About me, I am Mike Jones aka lerpiedood. I am a 15 yr old self taught cg artist. I live in Utah and there are no cg classes at my school, the only class I can show my skills off in are TV production. Do not be afraid to critique me on my work because of my age, if my work sucks, it sucks, not because of my age, but because of my skills. I don't think my work sucks. If you think so, please give me a good explaination as to why it sucks.

Ok, now onto the art. Sorry for the long post, just have slow 56k, and have been kicked off net, so am typing to pass time, and modeling as well. Have fun critiqueing my model, I aprritieate the crits!:airguitar

Thanks for the comments guys.
IDownupI: you're wrong there "was" something wrong with it, corners of the mouth were a little bit off, I noticed after watching an episode of smallville. But I fixed the lips!
Here's a test render, lips look better as you can see

nice work on the ear, its very good. I think the nose could use a bit more definition on the creases tho. For some reason she seems more like a male than a female, I can't quite put my finger onit tho.. Like a young man 12-17 years old with a slim facial structure... heh sorry man

Thanks, the ear does look good. As to the head looking male, I think she looks pretty femine, but it's sortof difficult to see it as of now without hair, eyebrows, eyelashes ecspecially, and makeup.

I'm going to model the tear ducts soon, so if you have any advice as too how they should look, I need some.

Thanks for your comment, I know, the ear is a little bit off. I may remodel it in the future, right now going to try to finish other parts first. Most of the ear will be covered with hair, so I'm not going to worry much about it.

I got some time to add in the eyelashes, very complex process. Had to model a lash then duplicate a bunch and use magnet tool a bunch. Eyebrows will also be very time consuming, going to do them in a simular fasion.

why is she so sad ?

i agree with the eyes scale.

lerpiedood
02-13-2003, 07:35 PM
Thanks for your commments. I don't think the eyes are too big, her head is 5 eyes wide. The lashes could be a bit too big, but for right now the eyes look too big and noticible, because there is not any hair, eyebrows, and textures on her.

About her being sad, that's just sortof the default look of her face. I could pull the eyebrows out a bit more, which I may or may not do, but I kindof like the look, makes her have a little originality.

Cant: you are not mistaken, I used to be active in the 3dgs forums, and was planning on making a big game. I sortof lost intrest in making games, and have been focusing on high poly modeling most of my time. When A6 comes out, I may make a matrix like arena game with a few levels, something that my small team of 2 people can handle. My company, wurxware, you can check my site, but I havn't updated in ages, are focused in cgart, film production and some game design. Are you guys still working on Neon? That was looking sweet.

Well, I've decided to start making the hair. I've never made hair before, so I hope this goes well. Her style is a short, red,"Sleek & piecy" cut. Needing some hair ideas, I went to the store today and bought a Hair Style magazine. I got alot of funny looks, because I'm a 16 yr old boy in a Kmart, purchasing a female hairstyle guide, thank God for kmart's self checkout line. I was afraid people would think I was a transvestite or something. But I found a wonderful style in the magazine, and am trying to give her a simular style, I only modified the bangs because in the original style they cover her right eye. The hair in the style also shows a little bit of ear, which is a good thing, because I want the ears to be shown.

Here's my first test render.

looks good so far. The hair should add quite a bit to her personality.

lerpiedood
02-17-2003, 05:21 AM
Isamu7: You're right! The hair does give her alot of personality. I decided to go with sortof a punkish look because it makes her stand out from all the other cg girls with the now standard Aki hairstyle. It's also always fun to make some asymetrical hair.

Well, I was modeling the previous hair wrong, I noticed how I was doing it before there would be a lot of holes. So I redid the hair. It took me around 30 mins to model this hair. Getting speedy at my modeling :) This is the first layer of my hair only. So it's a little thin right now. Though Once it has two more layers it will have some good volume. Then a 4th layer with thin strands to add some split ends. The render times are pretty high, so I think I might use a clip map instead of a trans map.

Enough with the talk, here's the image. YAY!
http://mysite.iptic.com/wurxware/head_24.jpg

and as you can see, she does not look masculine.

She's looking good so far - no real criticisms about her on the anatomy side of things. When I saw your first post it reminded me a bit of "Hollow Man" where he's just wearing his plastic face mask - similar kind of look and texture.

Doing well! :applause:

lerpiedood
02-18-2003, 04:26 PM
Lol, hollow man. Yes, she did look funny when I first started her. Thanks for those who reply, guess alot of people don't see the second page, so they don't bother to reply, I'll edit the first post and include latest image in there.

I figured out how to use the clip map, now it's even more noticible to tell I only have one layer, though I'm working on those other layers. Her hair doesn't look like it is plastic wrap though. I decided that I'll make this layer the middle layer, because it's pretty close to the head, and will put another layer on top of it, a few more layers under it and at bottom to make the hair thicker, and one layer of small strands to add some split ends to make it look realistic.

If you have time to, I love any replies or crits you guys might have. I know it's hard to crit on this because it's looking pretty good already, but even if you cant crit much, I'd love replies. I'm an attention lover, hehehe.

She is coming along okay! As you mentioned before, the hair is the first layer but at least you've attempted hair - how many bald 3D human heads are there out there? Looks like a bit of a comb-over job at the moment. Can we see a profile view? At this current angle I'm not sure if you have enough "back of head" behind her ear but a side view will show this up more.

She'll look great once textured and hairified!

lerpiedood

yeah sure, here's a profile. I'll try adding some more layers today.

I gotta figure out how to do hair ....:wip:

Hi

Thanks for the profile view - yep - looks like her head is plenty deep enough :)

The eyelashes are a great improvement to the model too!

What I am a little concerned about is how the nose curves into the cheek - not entirely sure that it looks right.

As you say, the ear will be covered by hair so not too much to worry about there - it looks like a great ear anyway although I think in Burne Hogarth's book on drawing the human head, he mentioned something about the ear being tilted back slightly - if you feel like fiddling with your ears you might try to see how that looks.

Still going well

Digital Kami

so far very VERY nice... but two things:

1. the top of the ear should look a little thinner... it looks.... too thick

2. could you put a little bit of a blur between the pupil and the iris of the eye? it may be there already, but it just looks like there should be more of one.

other than that.... SUPERB work!!!!

Well I got some more time to work on her today. Started going a little out of control on the split ends, luckily not too out of control. She now has 4 layers of hair, and needs a little texture tweaking and uv mapping tweaking to get it looking good, but I'm much happier with it now then before, also I could cheat in some areas by having the unseen part of her head be textured a dark reddish color.

FallenSwordsman: Yeah, the nostrils could be a bit sharper, but I'm not too sure if I wanna add a ring there, could cause some even bigger probs then it fixes, but I should at least try. I have hogarths book on drawing heads. I might remodel ear later on.

Digital Kami: I'm not too worried about perfecting the ear right now, because most of it is covered, but maybe latter on when I get the rest of the mesh looking good I'll remodel the ear. The ear does not look top notch because I reused it from my previous head, which was infereor to this because I didn't study anatomy enough, but since then I've been studying and improved my skills. Same goes with the blur of iris texture, though that will be easy to fix, I'lll try and get on it sometime this week, probably during the texturing process.

anyways, I hope you enjoy this update

Hehe, I know. I need help texturing. I wanna try and see how she'd look with sas-lite hair, any tutorials or help, I've never been able to get sas-lite looking good?

FallenSwordsman
02-20-2003, 06:41 AM
Don't know so much about sas-lite but there is a sasquatch tutorial on the Worley website

http://www.worley.com/TutFiles/StuTut/index.htm

You should be able to do similar sorts of things with sas-lite.

Best of luck with it!

Thanks, here's my first sas-lite test. Still needs more work, and the front part. Any ideas on how to animate sas-lite hair?

Hey Lerpiedood-

This is looking great with sas-lite added! As you say, now you've got some hair in place, it becomes less essential for the ear to be modelled accurately.

I'm afraid I can't help you with animating it though - my animation skills have always been at the level of just moving cameras/whole objects around in a very unrealistic manner. All I know is that it can be done. If I do find something, I'll let you know.

Well done on the model so far, its looking great and getting better!

Modeling and styling hair in LW is a major pain in the butt. So here's something you may wanna take a look at.

http://www.polas.net/plugins/cloner.html

This plugin can make life much easier.

lerpiedood
02-22-2003, 06:58 PM
Thanks for your replies. I think I'll animate the hair with a mix of motion designer and bones for certain clumps and bangs. The style in the last image was just some test hair I made in 5 mins to try out sas-lite. It's pretty easy to make the hair guides, but shaping them into a stylish haircut may be hard. I've decided she's going to have the same style she's had before, just it will look much better.

I'm planning on making a 5-10 min film with her. I havn't exactly came up with too good a story yet, but she will be doing some Kung Fu fighting doo doo da do dee boom ba!

FallenSwordsman: Yes, I don't have to remodel the ear because of hair. But eventually I'm going to anyway, because I'm a perfectionist.

AmbientLight: that plugin looks cool, you were suggesting I use it to clone hair on the head? Though I most likely won't get the plugin, I'm a poor high school student with no job, so don't have a whole lot of cash, and with some testing I figured out a good way too make a spline cage of hair, style it and put tons of hair onto her head.

The hardest part about making hair has to be the bangs. But I'm going to spend some good time working on her today, hopefully, unless my parents force me too goto some party or social event with them, or shopping.I hope I can animate this.

Her ears look like they are 4 inches back from her cheek bones.
