THat's a nice pic but I think that the background clouds could be better. They look all clumpy and weird.

To be honest, I can't crit this seriously. I don't want to be a dick, but this is obviously a novice image, and as such there is little I can say that can help except: get more experience in designing, modeling, lighting, and rendering scenes.

I'm a big time novice here so I may not have much place saying anything at all but....I think that the sky looks a little too simple, the way that you have the structure really dark leads the viewer to think that there is a bright light on the opposite side of it, yet there is no sun, bright reflections, etc. Maybe try putting in a source that would make the object so dark. Other than that, I'd consider the land objects you have, the water looks fine but water causes corrosion and other effects, there should be maybe beaches there or broken up land rocks boulders pebbles maybe. Only other crit I have is that the clouds look rather flat, almost like they are a texture on a plane put behind the hills.

Just some ramblings, take them or leave them ;)

MODELING
Are the objects accurately depicted?
Are the objects cliché?
Are the objects relative to the scene/each other?

Score (max 10)___7___
i'll give this a 7, because while i can tell what i'm looking at, i can't see any details whatsoever. that's not a knock on you, i just can't see a danged thing.

TEXTURING
Are the textures believable?
Are the textures cliché?
Do the textures add realism?
Are the textures distracting?

Score (max 10)___6___
the only texturing i can see is on the rocks. the problem is, they're far away, yet i can see big detail on them. that gives the impression that either i'm on a psychotropic drug of some sort, or i'm looking at a tiny little shrine in front of 2 rocks in someone's back yard.

LIGHTING
Is the lighting believable?
Does the lighting work for the scene?
Does the lighting set the mood?
Is lighting used to cover up poor modeling/texturing?
Are there effects used/not used that should/shouldn’t be?

Score (max 10)___7___
i think that the lighting kills this scene more than anything. the shrine is completely in the shadows (or is it black? i've never seen a black one.) and the background really stands out as being bright. work on the composition in 2 areas here: the overall composition and the lighting composition. what's the subject of the picture? the shrine. yet the shrine is the hardest thing to make out. dig it?

PLACEMENT/DETAIL
Are the details accurate?
Are there too many/too few details?
Are the details cluttered/sparse?
Do the details mask a bad scene?
Are the details distracting?

Score (max 10)___5___
see, again, this is something killed by the other parts. there might be fantastic detail somewhere but it's so hard to distinguish that it's almost a moot point.

FIRST/LAST IMPRESSION
Does the picture make you want to look?
Will the picture stand out in your mind?
Is the picture blasé or cliché?
Does the picture get the point across?
Is the image constructed well?

Score (max 10)___8___
eight you say? why eight? it's because you're a novice. my first 3d program ever was bryce. this one might be bryce but i sort of doubt that. the reason i say 8 is because a lot of novices totally clutter their stuff with useless textures and models, etc... where as the composition here is relatively calm. i can see what you tried to do. what you need to work on is your exectuion. do some modeling. do some texturing. build an environment. what i suggest you do is, work on one at a time. try doing skies, and don't quit until your skies rule the world. then try water. then work on terrain, and texturing terrain. then combine them. make some realistic landscapes. try your hand at rocks and grasses and prairies and water. throw in some objects and make that look real. progressively get more complicated. pretty soon you'll be giving critiques to novices here. pretty soon i might be working for you, who knows?

TOTAL=____33/50_____
that's not bad, especially for a novice. now get to work! let's see some more output! work on those skies!

Thanks for your reply i can see your very observant and i like people like that as i can learn from the comments and improve my work, im using 3ds max 5 and i wanted to get the lighting right but i just couldnt do it i was aiming for a bright light coming from the sky behind the clouds so the shrine couldnt be seen exactly i tried to make the hills at the back look distant (the first image i posted) but it kinda didnt work with the shrine being black as well so i dropped that and had a go at texturing but is not right either as the texture makes it look well look as you said really i tried tiling but that didnt work.
I spent most of my time on the water effect and the reflection of the bright light i tried to get.
The sky was created by volume fog and i spent quite a while adjusting the density and changing the colours step size etc
Im going to improve on this image just because i have got a positive reply from you which has given me confidence that i can do a relatively decent image i thank you for that!
Regards.
