View Full Version : Soa Lee - Artist Profile
PaulHellard 11-24-2006, 02:34 AM Hi there,
Soa Lee has been incredibly busy lately. I tracked her down to gather this interview when her 'Europa' image was selected for the cover of 'EXOTIQUE 2'. She told me her creative life has found focus with the accelerated interest in her work. Soa says, "before being in EXOTIQUE, I couldn't have found a use for my illustrations. So it was a great experience for me."
Click the image, read the interview, buy the book and feel free to comment.
* warning: borderline nudity.

Fantastic work, and yes that second page should not be seen at work. Unsuspecting passerbys will think you're strange, lol.

Hello Soa,
I would like to mention how much I love your work. It is truly beautiful. Your comments about using 3D applications as a means to an end, reflects my own attitudes and thoughts on the subject. After all, it's the end result that counts.
I have one question for you, regarding your character creation workflow : How long does it take for you to push out a completed work? For example Europa, from initial idea to finished image?
Congratulations on your success and best of luck in the future.
Cheers :D

I have seen some of your work before but not that much. Your a new source for inspiration for me. I'm training in traditional animation and love working in 3d. I also loved working in cels, which I thought were not used anywhere, sadly. Do you still work in animation?
Soa Lee has been my idol since I started CG, she was doing exceptional work when people generated...whatever u wanna call "that". Who would tell some of those renders are from around 2001!
Paul, can you perhaps mention that the second page of the article may be considered unsafe for work? :)
Actually my boss triplicated my salary thanks to that :)

Soa Lee,
i had saved down a few of images from u in this forum b4. Until today's article, i know it was from a same artist. I will call u artist more due to ur dream is to be an artist more than a "3d technician".hehe....(I know u will loving it more oso)
I oso like ur Flash character female.. they are so unique. Wonder why they were not accepted. Maybe wrong timing? Still they had become my new inspiration in 2D style..
Hope i can be ur student. hahaa.Do u accept online student?
Send my regards to ur husband & ur child.(If u have.)

Indeed extremly nice work although honestly nothing matches up with your own image. (I assume the second image bellow the title is yourself) You can clearly see a difference :). I am just a bit curious what is your aim? I read through the interview maybe I missed it but I could not find the overall goal you're going after. Your characters have a bit of I don't know a fantasy touch something just does not look real at all I think it is mostly the skin it looks way too smooth like they have a massive thick layer of make-up on them. Nonetheless still very beautiful images!

Congratulations Soa, you completely deserve this. It was you and your works that have started me to CG and you've always been my ultimate idol. Best wishes to you and always look forward to your future projects :)
Great work, my favourite is the second picture in the first page, with the yellow wallpaper background.. oh, wait a minute...
just kidding, they're all lovely! And yes, it's refreshing to see a female artist in 3d, because it's such a male-oriented industry!

Unfortunately , i'm a 29 all grown up !..just a word to say you have great work out here. You said you wished to be remembered as "artist" more then 3d tech : mission accomplished !

Nice work. But wtf is wrong with everyone? Second page, nsfw? I see only pair of round delicious boobs, just like every woman has. And I like what I see. Am I strange? No. Whats wrong with this "modern" world? Blood and gore is everywhere including cartoons but showing beauty of naked human body is bad? Cmon lets thing about it. ;)
Great, Soa! you rock ^^
I remember being so inspired by your works when I started 3D. Can't wait to see all you constellation images!

Hi there Soa Lee,
I was surprised by the second page too - nudity. But I think it should be shown, because it is a great-looking model. It has a good plenty of aesthetics. I think one of your best renderings of a woman.
This interview is no surprise. You deserve it. Congrats.

About time we interviewed one of the Korean stars in CG. Well deserved.
I've followed Soa's work since the very beginning when her stuff first appeared on the internet together with Kim Hyun Jung's (they shared a site together, now Eun Hee Choi shares a site with him). It wasn't until recently did I find out that Soa's also a very modest and kind person as well (based on our correspondence). It's always great to find out that someone with talent is also a nice person. :)
I have always loved your works Soa. Can't wait to see more great stuff from you. And great interview!
But I have always wondered why most female artists portray mostly females in character works? Not that there's anything wrong with that. As a guy, I couldn't wish for more.:D But is this explainable or it's something guys just wouldn't understand? I mean you see way more male artists doing female characters and we know the reason why don't we?:) But isn't it the same for female artists? It's natural to be influnced by attraction but obviously not the same it seems. Hope this is ok to be discussed. Admin feel free to remove if not appropriate.
I have the same curiosity than BLX, but I think it is because it is the only you can sell perhaps?
Another curiosity is why not a korean female in your work. Occidentals love asiatic females, I would like see one from you!
All of us love your work Soa.

Womball (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=192021),It was all due to passion for the animation that I got to know 3D. But animation is put aside for now. I want to focus on this now. Illustration is fun, and there are lots of things to learn. Someday I want to make a short image movie rather than a movie.
DDS (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=13858), Thank you very much you remember that time. There're many old renders on this issue.

I guess the way I look at woman can be a little different from how male artists do. When an artist draws a woman, it's usually ‘a woman you want to see'. I do too, but the difference is that I add ‘a woman who represents me'. It gives me catharsis. The female character has my Utopia. Also, I want the character to display how I understand her emotion and thoughts as well as her body. Female is my main subject not because I feel more comfortable with it over the male subject. It is because the female subject interests me the most, more than any other subjects. For now, that is. Thanks for your question. :)

Hey~ Good to see another Korean artist =)
chook ka heh yo~
You're models are just wow... I'm currently working on a female too. =P
I'm enjoying the reference MUCH better than the ones I looked up for my male model.
You're women look beautiful.
I had a question. When you model these characters for images, do you rig them and pose? or did you pose them and then start to model away?

Thanks for the response. I see now. And that representation/reflection really works well because you know how it might feels to be that character or how it might represent your feelings. Just like System/Method acting. But it's really hard to find male artists who actively portray male characters to represent their feelings, I guess call us guys perverts.:D (JK) But in my opinions, people who do character of their own sex will have better ways to represent feelings and beings without of course going into sexuality unless that's really the drive to create. Enough spam for me. Again, thanks Soa for your response. I look forward to more of your excellant works! And there definitely need more great female artists like yourself in the industry.

Yes I noticed that about three weeks ago and we've been trying to have it freed from that 'threat' signage. Try her CGPortfolio. <http://soanala.cgsociety.org/> Her work in the EXOTIQUE books show the best example of her work.
