View Full Version : Mechanical Butterfly
11-23-2006, 10:07 PM
Hey guys! Iīm this time gonna show you something Iīve been working on, itīs a little mechanical animal which will be part of a trailer video for my bandīs album. Itīs supposed (as the title says) to be a butterfly, you wont see the wings here, I have to work on them, I already have some ideas for it. The tail is the next in my list though and also some little moving pieces. I posted this on 3dtotal.com too, so some of you Iīm pretty sure already saw this:

hey, I like the model, the texture is cool and it reminds me of a Greek professor in the Aladdin cartoon series from Disney.
But you have a locomotive animation on the side of the butterfly, and it doesnt seem right, the way you made it is very cool but it's not the way it would work, the part with the smallest resists tens would probably slide in and out the tube, not both parts separately from each other.
I hope you understood me :)

Not sure I follow you actually. But I like this kind of feedback. Iīm really not that much into mechanics (which I know I should maybe if I wanna make this right) so I didnīt quite understand why it should be coming in and out. Even though I do think that would look cool. About the locomotive being only on one side, I meant to do it that way as I was aiming to generate some asimetry in the little robotic fella.
Anyway, thanks for the sugestions, and feel free to explain further! thank you very much! :)

Hey guys, Iīve been working on an animation Iīll use as some sort of trailer or something. Here is a playblast!!

No comments at all? I could really use some critics on this one!

hi LikuidSnake. Wow its very cool. I like the concept. Its looking very nice=)
The camera animationis cool too. Its a very good idea to aim the camera up. It gives the impression of a massive unirverse of cogs.

I've been watching this piece since you first posted it. Bravo! This is a fantastically creative piece and I can't wait to see more! How about the wings? What's happening with those?
As for critique, it's tough, cuz it's so good! The only part that sticks out to me is the rumble. It's very violent, but he seems scarcely effected by it. He ducks (my feeling is there should be more side stepping and catching himself, tho I understand the idea of centering his weight). The thing that really sticks out to me about it is that his antenae seem not to follow thru after the vibrating is done. Perhaps they should flale a bit more violently, and take a moment after the shaking stops to re-callibrate, if that makes any sense.
Great work! Keep it coming!

Hey guys, thanks both for the comments!
aghill, itīs pretty cool you mention that as the idea is exactly to make you believe there is a world all made of cogs out there! thanks for the feedback.
travishowe, Iīm working on the wings right now. I had to wait for them as I got some really serious issues with the render I kinda got fixed by now. About the animation, Iīm expecting to emphasize the rumble with the sound. If I get the sound Iīm looking for, that shake will be up to par with it. But Iīll keep in mind that it looked too strong. Also Iīll keep in mind the other details when it comes the time to polish the animation, right before final rendering.
Thanks again for reading and giving feedback. Updates coming soon! Stay tuned! lol.

 Very nicely rendered. I like watching the progression as well. :)

like it alot...
I don't know about the eye... I'd probably zoom out from the leaves of the "plant"... but make the plant water tight...
I like the rest of the cameraride though!
The camshaker was a bit too heavy in my opinion (but that's probably because it's without sound)
The wings were a bit too small... maybe you want to make them unfold or something... that they're more visible...
but maybe that's because you named it butterfly... and I expected something totally different. :)
'love how you created this mechanical world...
keep it up

Here comes after a long time, a little update. A render test with a little bit of DOF.
This is what the render will look like, even though thereīs a still a background I havenīt dont yet, dont think that solid color is the final back.

Wow, I like the render. I will keep an eye on this thread.

Keep it up.

dude this is lookin really good reminds me of sonic the hedgehog oil level good stuff i were doin this i would do 3 passes for the motion blur 1. very minimum 2. very blured and 3. no blur then layer them in to a comp then if your using after effect jus put all 3 into a comp then make a copy of that comp an offset to you have some delay so it looks really fast.

really great short, specially like the camera. the only crit i can give is that the edges of the cylinders of the tail are a bit too sharp for that rusty look, a fillet or chamfer should do the job. keep up the great work
ps: i like the second colorsheme better(the one in the video), the first is somewhat boring

Hey guys! thanks for the comments and suggestions.
thehive, I havenīt though about mblur in 3 pases. Although this time I got to handle it with reelsmart plug and the mental ray shader for motion vectors. It works pretty good. Anyway, next time Iīll try the way you mention! thanks a lot!
dervish, I totally agree with the sharp edges now that I look into it. For this time I doubt Iīll re render that. About the color scheme, the first one also started to look bored so thatīs why I try to make it look more interesting which imho I guess I could do!
HERE (http://cablemodem.fibertel.com.ar/jonnhy/final05.mov) you can find an almost final version, even though the colors are looking a little washed out thanks to h264.
By the way, I got a very cool sound designer to work on this, his name is Csaba Wagner (his mail is firstname.lastname@example.org in case youīre interested in sound designers). Thanks for the effort man! really apreciate it!

reelsmart rocks ^^ i love the tracking functions, works pretty well with good footage, wich 3d is ever.
about the rerender, im not sure how you rendered this but you could always try assigning evrything else but the tail with a matte, would render pretty fast then, wouldnt work too well with gi tough unless you have it cashed already ^^, if that doesnt work you could render a bw-mask of the tail geometry and work with that in compositing to rough up the edges a lil bit.
nice sound by the way
