View Full Version : Just a fairytale …
Digitalpaint 11-23-2006, 04:28 PM Hi,
I would like to get some feedback on this piece I’ve been working on for some time now.
Just a fairytale …
It all started with the flower and the girl and her dress. The left half of this painting is 70-80% finished but the right half needs al lot more work. I started the base of this painting in black and white. And later on I covered most off it with an opaque layer of colour( in painter.) http://www.cre8iv.nl/blog/wp-gallery/Nelumbonucifera/Emile@Cre8iv.nl_01.jpg

Only for the dress I used a simple colour layer in Photoshop. Now this dress doesn’t really blend in with the rest(yet) but like I said it needs a lot more work.

Having stared at this painting for quite some time now I not really sure if I’m on the right track.
Let me know what you think…
Thanks.

WOW o_O that's incredibly awesome ! what amount of details...!
I don't have any bad critics to tell... just something that bothers me a little so I'll tell you.
It's the limit between her thighs and the skirt, it seems unatural, maybe thighs are too bright or miss maybe shadows OR maybe the skirt needs more bright light or shadows in some places ? I don't know.. but that's the only thing that bothers me and distracted my eyes at first sight. ;)
Otherwise that's freaky beautiful !
Looking forward to see the next !

It's a lovely piece of work, Cre8iv! You're probably right in that you've been staring at it for too long. Why not put it away for a couple days or a week and then go back to it fresh? The only thing that I notice is the dress keeps pulling my eye. I think the colour might be too strong, especially given the amount of folds and detail. Maybe a softer colour would help?
It's a gorgeous painting though, and I look forward to seeing the finished product!

Everything is so pretty, the dress looks amazing.
The only thing that bothers me is the slight over exposure lighting on the girl's upper body on the right. Where does that light come from?

Dhella, Chris and Linda, thank you for your nice :) and helpful comments.
I made the suggested changes and the dress (although far from ready..) looks much more like it belongs in this scene.
And Linda you’re right about the light. The first stage of this painting started with the woman and her dress so the focus was on her. But that changed a bit during the next stages. Maybe the whole scene should be a lot darker…
Going to do some more work on her dress and hair (medusa look) and maybe give her some more attributes..

^_^ i really love it – whole of it – and especially sence of movement of girl’s head and the lion ^__^ Can we ask for a closeup of the lion next time?
Desaturating the dress indeed linked the girl and her soruundings with the rest, but she (dress, legs, and green stuff around her legs) still seem a little flat. (Am I criticising that??? ... _-_ ...)
Maybe making the lotus flower a main colour accent (giving it slightly warmer colours than girl’s skin) will give sth to composition?
And i was really suprised that such a nice thread had no stars ;) i have almost overlooked it ;) but it seems better now ;)

I worked a bit on the idea of the medusa hair thing. It isn’t ready but you get the idea …

great work, i'm asking do you think where the girl comes
out of the water should be lower in the pic, cause to me it seems so
ps. so much better with the darker dress, the pic seems more whole now

Thanks Panu, I’ve been wondering about that myself but for the sake of composition I will leave things as they are now....
Working on hair and skin....

@Angel : thanks, I'll make a little tut when I"m done with this painting.
@ Stanislaw.
Well the idea is to have only ambient light with no hard shadows. Here and there the light break trough the leaves But it needs a lot more work later on: I’ll create some really dark parts and emphasise other parts by putting them in the light to simulate a kind of mystical atmosphere…

This is insanely good. One thing I can suggest is to 'blur' some parts slightly to help add depth (and keep the viewer's eye where you want, in the sharper areas). Looking great, keep it going.

This is truly beautifull piece, you must have the patience of a saint!
The only thing I would say is that a few darker areas in certain areas of the image might add a bit more depth.
Have you seen this thread, http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?p=3558243#post3558243 it has lots of great examples of what Im talking about. Steven Stalberg always seems add depth to his overpaintings with washes of darker shades over less important areas of the image.
I could understand why you might be reluctant to do it though as it might detract from some of the beautifull detail that deserves so much attention.
Anyway thats just my opinion. Hopefully Ill be able to paint as well as you one day!

It's coming along beautifully, Emile! I like what you did with the lighting. It seems to blend better somehow and fits the mysterious quality the image evokes.

Nice change. I think that adds a lot more realism to it now with the altered lighting.

thanks for the lion
indeed new light makes it even better. now the only thing i think can be improved, is the fact that girl's carnation has both highlights and shadows in cold tones ;)

the lilly pads on the right are really shiny while the left ones are not and in this new colour scheme it looks really odd imo but the whole image is still very pretty :)

Oh, I only just noticed the stone lion in the right of the image. Looks magnificent! So many intricate details everywhere.
The only thing I don't like is the colours. In my opinion they seem muted and the skin looks too monochrome. But like I said that's just my opinion.
Everything else is top notch!
