- hmmm......what should i say ???.....Its Controversial! .....Snip: "SWAY Studio, one of North America’s leading visual effects studios, announced today its contribution to the new U2 and Green Day music video entitled, "The Saints are Coming". For this powerful production, SWAY integrated many photo-real CG elements, including Harrier jets, Apache helicopters, Stealth Bombers and tanks into existing news footage from Hurricane Katrina. The result is a thought-provoking and emotional video that shows what it might have looked like had the government responded differently to the disaster. Directed by Chris Milk (http://cgindia.blogspot.com/2006/11/gnarl-graduated-to-3d-vfx.html) of Radical Media, this controversial video was" ........Read more ok (http://cg-india.com/cgnews/SwayVFX_saints.html)!!

Bravo, simplemente bravo.
At last. CG put to good use. That this becomes a trend would enoblar our humble craft.

That is the first time I have seen that video. I am from Kenner, LA about 10-15 minutes outside of New Orleans. It is very nicely done, could things have been different? Of course, but let me add that that song is somewhat of an anthem for crowds at the Superdome. It is played before player introductions, I was there for the live performance as well as every other game, I commend them for what they are doing, being in the crowd at the opening of the Superdome, and being able to listen to that song was a night I will never forget. The Superdome is much more to this city than just a place where my beloved Saints play.
Sorry for going off-topic, it is a subject that is very close to my heart and life.

Wait a minute why is changing the facts to make things look good on the government in power better? Shouldn't we leave this sort of footage alone so that future generations know what really happened?
I know no one is going to use this music video as reference on a term paper in 50 years but if this becomes a trend maybe all government screw ups can be smudged over. It is disturbing to see how things like this start rolling.

Make them look better? I thought the point was to make them look bad with a " This is what SHOULD have happened" example.

I havent seen the video so I dont know how it was approached but wouldn't it look better if instead of seeing no tanks and helicopters you see them? It would make it look like they had the situation under control when they didn't.
It's not like they used cartoony tanks, they used the real deal and tried to make it as photorealistic as possible. I dunno just my take on it.

The cool shot of the poeple being lifted by a jet plane and not getting fried by the exhaust! Did you see the directors cut where they had the jet firing missiles at looters with plasma tv's... it's not cool though the way U2 and Greenday obviously hate New Orleans, wasn't the place levelled enough that they feel they should have sent in Tanks and Fighter Jets? Obviously they feel it could have been a lot more expensive and cooler looking once you edit out all the nasty messy people who were actually working on the relief efforts originally.
Seriously though, please remember - No politics on CGTalk. Talk about the CG in the video, this is CGTalk after all.
I felt that they did a pretty good job on the CG and compositing, there were a couple of shots that looked very rushed, for instance the one towards the beginning of the jets flying over the superdome just didn't feel at the right scale at all, but overall it was done pretty well, so congrats to the team, I'm guessing it was probbaly done in a very short timeframe.

gotta agree. I really think that this is not up to the kind of standard I have seen from Sway before. I get the feeling that maybe this was very short schedule !

CG is nice...for what it is.
Bonno still sucks though, but he's still way better than that emo singing the song.

What has become of Green Day, pairing up with U2, for shame. Bono doesn't really give a shit about anything he talks about, and I'm glad the song will generate money for New Orleans instead of more money U2 will get and tax evade and continue to guilt trip everyone else.
I thought the concept was clever and the FX were pretty good for a music video with a short deadline. But they didn't need to say that the military help came from forces brought home from Iraq. The U.S has plenty of aircrafts, no need to bring a whole other argument into the picture, especially something as illogical as that. It was overkill..

Hmmm Nuke-CG, I used to be a massive fan of U2 when I was growing up but my music taste has widened considerably in the last 10 years. I think you are missing the point, OK they might tax evade or whatever but hey the 2 of these bands pairing up is a massive publicity vehicle. What is wrong with that, the intentions are all good, are they not?
Highlighting the worlds issues when you are one of the biggest stars on the planet is better than any of us JOE PUBLIC trying to sway the world???
It's hard to tell what the CG quality is like due to the poor compression on youtube, shame...

Oh, please don't think for a second I'm against helping others :) I think any fund-raising is great to help with humanitarian support; I myself donated to the appeal, and so did many others outside the United States. I have just read too much about Bono's ulterior motives lately, and I don't think his heart is in the right place at all. That is my only qualm, everything else about it is beautiful.

am i the only one who thinks they should have checked their facts before doing that video ?
come on a harrier jumpjet rescuing people or a apache helicopter with a winch man somethings just dont mix and dont even get me started on the b2 stealth bomber dropping care packages...
even for the time only beeing 2 and a half week i think they could have done things better in a more believable way...

Nice CG... but its pure propaganda which is what I expect from U2, shame Green Day got dragged into it. Lovely amounts of CG hardware on show, but if the USA spent as much on keeping its people in decent conditions instead of paying for all that CG hardware, they probably would have never needed to make the video in the first place. Ohwell...... not politial, just pointing out its irrelevance
