Title: The Bovine Slump
Name: Michael Engstrom
Country: United Kingdom
Software: 3ds max, Brazil r/s, Photoshop, ZBrush

In a nut shell... I made this piece in reaction to what been going on in the British fine art scene over the last decade or so. The leader of the Brit Art moment is Damien Hurst, mostly famous for putting dead animals in formaldehyde tanks and exhibiting them in galleries. It seems best leaving it up to the viewer to interpret my feeling about the subject.
Hope you like it, and thanks in advance!

For the dead cow and rider, I made low poly meshes in Max, then created the heavy details in Zbrush2. The background gallery was made in Max, then the whole thing rendered in Brazil. I needed the final image to be at least 10,000 pixels high for an exhibition I hope to have soon, so there was a final detail pass in Photoshop for all the fur and intricate details.

3 stars. Ok, thanks for voting, but can anyone give me some tips on how to improve. I put my heart and soul into this piece, and I have no idea how to push it unless you guys tell me.

CheersI would say this one is done, you pretty much nailed it. Don't worry about the rating there will always be some sour grapes guys who will come in and rate you down no matter what.

Very good!

I particularly like the tongue, and the man's left arm. I see a lot of dead people, you really nailed the appearance of lividity in the arm!

Amazing work Michael!! .....
I dont know really why, but at the first look it remind me a lot to the image winner of the machiflesh contest, made by Antropus (Krishnamurti M. Costa)...perhaps the pose of characters...

Anyway your work is completly incredible....

As for front page, I have always understood that I will never get that on a site like this. But thanks so much for those that think I should. Good luck to all of you!

Man, i usually dont post here, at least not to posted images, coz I rather prefer to be reading for learning, and working on my projects. But I can see your point. When I put my final project soon on CGtalk I will also want some critiques. So here Ill tell you:

Man The idea is GREAT, I love it. and the execution of the dead guy is just perfect, I love the expresion of the guy.
My critiques would be, the main subject looks like floating compared to the background, maybe because the strong saturation, specially the cow.
And the cow texture looks something odd. I cant see if it is expected to be hair or skin. I cant also get the overall shape of the cow.
I dont understand some of the sharp shadows on the floor (but it could be just me), and there are some overexposed spots on the floor where the model stands.

Other than that, Perfect. Just be proud you can make such overwhelming images ;) I and most of us, still cant LOL
