Hey

Saturday I've started to model a head in 3DSMax 4. It took me about 5 Hours yet. I hope you give me some criticism on my modelling. The Head should also get a body, this will come up soon.

btw the beard is only testing maybe it is also in the finished Version.

So c&c are very welcome. Helps to get better.

The face is great, but the ears need some major work.

Firstly, they're too small in proportion to the head and do not connect properly with the sky. Take a look at the side view and you'll see what I mean. There's just not enough skin there.

Second, they're improperly shaped, especially the bottom of the ear which is too flat. The upper part of the lobe is also lacking in detail there. There ear is not supposed to be that round in that location, it's supposed to round out some.

good job ! fix the ears... are you modeling from a box ?

scorpion

Not from a box, but one plane is the beginning.

Lets see what I can change with the ears.

Yes, this was the first tutorial i've done for character modelling.
Now this is my second try on modelling a human. And now I've tested the way Stahlberg is modelling.

The main wires are always rings. Around the mouth , nose, eyes and the neck. I think its better if i paint some lines in a picture and post it here. But i've got no time yet. Going to watch a movie.

Great model - very distinctive and well crafted. I agree the ears need work, but it's a WIP. Keep posting - it will be cool to see your progress :)

@ivo D

This is one of the threads of stahlberg

http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=26707&highlight=stahlberg

It is the indian woman. On one page there is a wireframe.

And this is the thread from king of tartine

http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=41815&highlight=stahlberg

There is a better version of the wireframe.

So I've started to model the three planes of the nose. Then the complete nose, with mouth and around the chin to close the ring. This is the yellow line. Then model this to the blue line. The next step is the red line and follow the green line. The finishing part is also a litte bit strange. cause you get more and more polys. This should be the black line.

I hope you can follow me. If not look a the pictures. I think they are a very good reference. The first you should get is the lowest poly version of the picture from king of tartine. The Meshsmooth the whole thing an start to add more detail.

The only thing you'll need is good reference pics for your modell, the rest should be easy if you know the basics.

Sorry for my english if there is something wrong.

Hey Scorpion, your model looks really really good.. but there's a couple things i think can be tweaked.. the ears, like some other people where saying need some work. I also think that the bridge of the nose could come closer to the eyes from the side view... try it and see if you like it more. Finally i think the whole neck needs to come forward a little more... i feel there shouldn't be that much spacing between the chin and the adam's apple and the space between the ear and the back of the neck.. dunno, suggestions. Other than that, i think it looks great and if you're using Stahlberg's techniques.. then you are definately on the right track! Keep up the good work!

yeah i agree on the neck crit. the back of your head actually sticks out further than the back of your neck. but other than that its great. i dont know about the ear needing all that much tweaking. not all ears are the same. good stuff i say!!

Thx at all that posted until now. Thx for the praise.

I've made a pic with the lines of the things you thougth i should change. I hope I understood everything right so please check the pick.

The red lines are things that should change and the blue lines how i think it should be following your comments.

My system is a little unstable the power supply makes problems. Lets see when the next update comes. Perhaps I change it a bit more in your way, but not completely as you want to have it. My opinion is that it's too much.

hey there scorpion.. i dont mean to break your model apart.. i think it looks awesome.. i just gave you my opinion based on pictures i've seen and just looking at people that it seems some of the proportions and just alignment of things on the head seemed a little unusual. By no means do you HAVE to make these changes. Perhaps if you look at websites like fineart.sk you can see references that can help you determine if you want to make any changes to your model.. that is, if you're going for a realistic head or anything similar. Anywho, i still think the model looks great and that you're heading the right direction. Cheers!

I think i know what you are meaning. Every head is different, but I thought tha longer I looked at the head that I had to change a litte more. So you can't break the model. :D

Thx,
The first one I know, but I don't understand it very well cause I'm not using maya and my english is not that good.

The second one I think is better cause it shows some paintings of a texture.
