very nice model, looking very good so far. do you have some reference pics somewhere for us to compare to ???

i think it will be quite a blast to texture and light that thing. should come out quite elegant.

i'd love to see a rendered version. So far the model looks solid.

dangit, you beat me to it, i was thinking about doing one of these too :D

looking good so far, you've definitely got the feel of the vehicle from the film going. what techniques did you use to model it?

Thank you all for your crits.
well, while Iīm modeling I donīt make any render so youīll not see anything rendered untill itīs finished, the only renders I make are in order to see how reflections work on the surface, in terms of surface continuity and so on, no "final" renders although.
The technique for this car is quite different from other I made before because of its design that itīs so "geometric".
I started to model a "reference" car in NURBS to check proportions and things like that (I had almost no reference to check it but with NURBS you can make changes quickly), then I convert them to polys and star to cut them with the "cut tool" to make sure all the lines where correct in terms of geometry while maintaining continuity, then I started the last part wich I call "move verts here and there" and making the holes for lights and things like that.

Thereīs no more techniques for this, although itīs very dificult to model this car I want to finish it to make some animations and renders.

Check back for updates!

:)

Little update:

http://www.inicia.es/de/jom.peich.de.joie/Lexus3.jpg

Well, this is only the rear part, but Iīve made some other improvements..., nothing special.
It has been very time-consuming because I spent lots of time tweaking continuity and bumps in order to make reflections work as I want, not as "they" want, you know...

:)

Check for updates!

Great work so far but I think looking at the last screengrab and your reference that you have the front a bit too wide on your version. The gap between the headlights and the bonnet depresion seems to be the culprit.

I'd also double check the width of the wheels arches at the front. It looks like you may have made them thinner than the real thing to compensate for the extra width in your car.

But good going so far, I know it's exceedingly difficult to work from non-orthagonal reference. Especially from photo's that are bound to have some unknown lens distortion.

joie
02-24-2003, 04:02 PM
Oh!, you are right, the depression is widder and I made the corner more angulous than in the reference, thankīs a lot for that, and you are right about the references, itīs veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery hard to work with them, everyone have different lens distorsion and I became sick at start! :D

joie
03-09-2003, 07:48 PM
Well, very little update today, Iīve been sick for 3 days now..., so I only have been able to do this, anyway, I think Iīve correct proportions problems and little detailes added:

I think your wheels need to be deeper.
The spokes are much more into the wheel in the pictures compared to your model.
The wheel model needs a deeper "dish"
otherwise, everything looks very accurate

What are the "spokes" are you talking about?, sorry, but my english is very..., limited :)

joie

What do you think about these updates?, donīt be shy, crit with no remorse! :D

There ar little diferences between this 2 images, the last one is the second, I had some proportion problems...

Ooh, missed this thread before, cool to see more versions, seems a natural since the real thing looks CG :) I love this car, it's like they finally built the 'coupe' version of a lightcycle after all these years.

Can see a few things in the latest grabs that seem off..the windshield/roofline seems to dent in too much inbetween the mirrors and the headlights, most likely need to lower the roof there but also make sure that curve is smooth and tight. The nose/front could be just a touch more rounded and blended together, though it's a bit distracting having the missing polys on the bumper, hard to tell :)

There also seems to be more of a roundness to the sides, in the last grab your sides look very flat, although you're getting the cutting in effect, you can see in the ref pics from the highlight that runs between the rear view mirror and the rear wheel more of the curve of the sides. It seems also that there's some additional details under the grey section in front of the rear wheels that aren't in yet.

Ok, well, trying for merciless, but didn't mean to write a novel :D Really it seems down to proportion tweaks, it's that last 10% that is always the most time consuming. I've had to model a lot of stuff from too few/crappy reference pics, so I feel your pain, you've done a great job so far.

joie
04-18-2003, 08:47 PM
Well, you are right at all, Iīve changed many things this time and I near to let the outter part of the car finished, I will star to model the inner part soon, stay tunned:

joie
05-02-2003, 05:50 PM
Ok, Iīve started the inner part, and the most dificult to model since I have only two reference pics and one of them id totally CG so are many diferences between them..., guess Iīll have to invent some parts that are missing in both pics and others that are different from one to another...

Hope you like it!

I cannot even begin to imagine how hard it would be to attempt modelling a car of this magnatude...kickass...

My only crit is you seem to have lost the slight curvature of the front windscreen and the tyre profile needs to be lower.

Henning Birkela's model also looks stunning :D

One day I hope to be able to model as good

joie
05-04-2003, 06:27 PM
Yes, The slight curvature is there for sure, but itīs so "slight" that nobody can almost see it..., but itīs there, sure.

I hope to model the interior part to show my progress as soon as I can, but itīs so difficult to model without good references...

Well, Iīve made the rear part of the inside part of the car, iīm happy with it and just thinking to leave it and become texturing, what do you think?

http://www.inicia.es/de/jom.peich.de.joie/Sesiones/Lexus13.jpg

Well, and here is the real one, donīt compare them since I have three pictures and they are very different eachother and Iīve made my "own" version:

Well, thankīs for your comments.
This is how the entire car looks for now, I think itīs finished when I make the inner part of the lights (front and rear ones), so Iīm starting the texturing now:

there's still a little flaw in the seats, the headrest is bend over from the base of the chair it's not a seperate piece, you can see that in the original picture (I used the same one as reference for mine) and I made that bent headrest, other than that :applause:

edit: oh and it looks like there's a hole under the window behind the door

joie
09-12-2003, 09:46 AM
mmm, I made the seats out of two pieces, one piece to seat and one piece in order to place your back and rest your head, it isnīt a separate piece, if you could paint over and show me wereīs the problem it would very nice.
And yes, there is a hole behind the window, but, you know, this is the "unsmoothed" version, so it is plenty of holes and creases that are disapearing in the smoothed version.

But thankīs for the comments you have a very good eye on details.

:)

I attached an image of what I mean, left one is the original (at least how I see it) and right one is like you did it

joie
09-12-2003, 10:30 AM
Oh, I see what you mean.
The point is that I bought the scale model and it isnīt like that, in the image they are like you pointed to, this is true. But I have three pictures and they are diferent in averyone and, because I donīt like the way they appear in the real one, I decided to remodelled them as Iīd like them to be...
Iīll make the other version and will make a popular voting hu?

:)

Hello guys, this is a test render of the car in order to test reflections and the way the shaders work on surfaces, there is much light but itīs only a test, you know...

joie

Oh, yes, there is nothing there, this is only a test render, the car isnīt finished and I have to make the inner part of the lights and things like that.

here!! (http://www.threedy.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8693&highlight=lexus)... This guy also modelled the Lexus CS 2054 from Minority Report

Nice work btw!! very good, i only think you should make the the car more shiny... looks a little fuzzy (if that is the right word) now...

joie
12-05-2003, 05:00 PM
What do you mean with "fuzzy"?

I wanted some dust in the car, you know, it is outdoors, so a little of dust is OK, and thankīs for that post that car looks good.

OK guys.

So here is the model finished, I made this photo of the real car crossing my street, so a took the camera and... voilá, here it is.

Hope you like it, I will make an animation but that will be in the near future i think.

Tell me your thoughts.

Thankīs
