Hey All,

Getting started using zbrush but have run into a small problem. I've export an obj out of maya and brought it into zbrush to paint a displacement. When I attempt to zadd/sub on the model with a small draw size in edit mode I get a REALLY choppy effect. I've tried pushing it about to about 4 million poly to see if it would smooth out at a higher divide level but with no luck. Its as if I was painting with the airbrush in photoshop with the scatter and spacing turned up really high. When i try the same draw size on a zbrush based sphere it seems to have no problems. It this an export problem? Is the scale in maya affecting it in zbrush? Any help will be highly appreciated.

Thanks

A few things that may help a little bit.

1. Turn on mouse smoothing in ZBrush. Go to Stroke and on the bottom turn Mouse Average to 4.

2. You can play with the scale in Zbrush Tool>Deformation>Size

3. Sometimes hiding portions of the model in Zbrush improves the sad effect of choppy strokes.

4. If you're really having a hard time examine the geometry you're working on. Make sure the base mesh has enough detail in the areas where you need alot of density to paint on.

Thats the best I've ever been able to deal with this problem in Zbrush, and over time it has nagged me less and less but usually when it does nowadays #4 was the culprit. I'd do some tests to see what works best for you, then you'll know how to build you're base meshes accurately to avoid the issue.

In zbrush - preferences – importexport - unify scale - bump that up to about 10 or so

The problem you are having is that your model is to small. And thus no matter what your draw size it’s just not big enough to get the effects you want on your model.

The unify scale will scale any model upon import and export so that you can paint fine details easily in zbrush, and it wont mess it up in any way like with normal or displacement maps so don’t worry.

That should fix your problem

skuby & eblondin,

Changing my mouse average to 4 made all the difference and pushing my scale up higher has made it even smoother.

Thanks
