i know in maya there are very handy things like setdriven keys. Does something like this exist in max 5.0? and if so what is it called?

I believe the closest thing you get is the reactor-controller. It's apparently had some fixes done to it in the recent 5.1 update btw, so you'll want to install that before messing too much I guess.

I don't know how useful the reactor-controller really is, I've never had a chance to use it as such. It seems neat though, and it seems to duplicate much, if not all?, all of the features of Maya's driven keys.

On a sidenote I've always insisted that they're called Driven keys, not Set Driven keys :)

Yep, the reactor controller is your equivalent to driven keys. And like gaggle said, definitely don't try to use reactor controller in 5 unless you're doing just two reaction states. In 5.1 they work great. Also, if you're using max 4.2 they work great.

A new combination I'm using now is Cluster-o-matic (basically just clusters) with reactor controller. Sweet.
