Title: Character Concept - Mayan Samurai by Alberto Ruiz & Bobby Chiu
Name: Bobby Chiu
Country: Canada
Software: Photoshop

This is a collaborative piece drawn by Alberto Ruiz and painted by me, Bobby Chiu. (I've waited MONTHS to write that sentence!)

Now, you might be thinking that Mayan and Japanese are worlds apart. Believe me, I thought so too at first, but then decided that "Ancient Japan Sketches" needn't be taken so literally. The Japanese elements were present, so we included her. I wouldn't want to tell this Mayan samurai woman that she's not getting into the book, would you?

I've been a fan of Alberto's for a while now. I've always admired his unique "Alberto Ruiz style" of designing women. And at the 2006 Toronto Fan Expo, I had the opportunity to tell him this in person. Ironically, he came over to our booth before I had a chance to find HIM. He introduced himself and said he was a fan of our work! This just goes to show: the internet is an incredible networking tool.

I wasted no time in asking him to be a guest artist for this book. Then he came up with the idea for a collaborative piece, and just like that, "Mayan Samurai" was born.

Nice work, Bobby! Alberto's a great guy, isn't he? And a fantastic artist. But it's really refreshing to see a different take on his women than the illustrator approaches Alberto usually does with his own work. Your painting style really looks nice on his exaggerated women. The face and the shiny deco on her black suit are the real stand-outs for me. Great work, both of you!

This is awesome. I love the crazy anatomy!

My only question is how do her shoes stay on her feet?

Thanks for the comments all. Alberto's style is very different and design-y. He doesn't follow the normal rules. If you ever met him, you'd know why. He's a very free spirited individual but also really down to earth.

pap87 - how does she stay on her shoes? that was something I was wondering as well. I just assume it's part of the design

Nice work ! my only crits would go to the right part of hip in the top of thigh, that is not samely stylised than the other side. So what's the wrong side of her buttock ? the left round or the right creased ? But's it's not important and it's a details, good picture !

Very funny!
Great work
I have only one comment:
I think that it could be interesting to have the shadow of the character on the wall and not just only on the floor in your composition. You have a strong character design and it could be more detached with a shadow on the wall (I hope you will understand my english...:))
But it really really great design:thumbsup:

Thats the wildest female figure I have seen to date. When I was floating around CGSociety, this image stook out from the rest. FANTASTIC!

The number one thing that is important to me is the character of a piece, and this one gives you very outlandish forms, which give the piece a different appearance to the norm.
