View Full Version : Blueprints trace
gabi68 11-20-2006, 08:34 AM Hi to all,
I know malink lines and arcs "over" blueprints is a very challenging job. Is very dificult to aproximate the right angle when "trace" blueprints. So I want to know if you guy's use some technique to accelerate and get more accurate designs after blueprints (trace with raster to vector prog. - pixel raster not working so anything else ...).
TIA

i'm using this:
drawing arc appromaxitely, rebuilding it, aligning cvs.

depends on what your makin and how accurate your prepared to go I think.

I want to achive best results in tracing but I think time for do that is very important. So ... any other technique ...

I think one of the most handy tools for tracing blueprints, particularly straight lines is the boolean curve tool. The nice thing about it, is that you can constrain your lines and not worry about intersecting them but simply tracing them long and then applying the boolean tool. Setting up the blueprint to be straight and to scale is also important but no matter how accurate the blueprint scan is, there is always subtle distortions it seems, so in the end there is need for you to adjust what you are tracing. Good luck.

I usually use the the curve or the interpolate curve commands. they work fine, fast and accurate and you can adjust any time. If you want them as arcs then you can convert them afterwards. In my experience what helps botzh in speed any accuracy is to have high resolution blueprint, so one is less dependent on visual judgement.
I could use vector tracing software such corel trace, afaik they make good results, but IMO you always need to adjust some details and tweak some points, that's why I don't use it but, make the curves right at once directly in Rhino.

This is slightly off-topic but I've been trying to find some "decent" (size and quality) blueprints for a Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 (2002-2006). If any of you recall that Rhino tutorial for modeling an Audi TT, you'll know what i mean by size and quality. The top ortho view was 1310 x 600 pixels.

I have a boatload of great high-res photos that will come in handy but the prints I've found so far are either too small or character lines are missing in some views. I've searched suurland, the-blueprint.com, 3dm3.com, jabbasworld, etc. Maybe I'm asking for too much, but any help would be appreciated...BIG TIME.

I've had good luck with Adobe Illustrator's "Live Trace" feature in "path mode". Export in DWG or DXF format for Rhino, and building the curves (on plane and then flow accordingly).
Blueprints are, unfortunately, rarely accurate enough to use driectly, so you'll always be eyeballing your curves (there's no easy way around that).
For blueprints, I recommend http://www.the-blueprints.com/index.php (Formerly Onno Van Braam's blueprint collection).

Thanks irieken, I'll give that a try. You'll have to bear with me here since I use Photoshop a lot but Illustrator not nearly as much. When you refer to using the "Live Trace" feature, do you mean on the actual photos or on the blueprints?
antisthenes, you've got more aliases than a CIA spook!!

The 'live trace' is new to CS2 but so easy to use and rather powerful. Check out this mini tutorial http://www.adobe.com/products/illustrator/newfeatures.html#nf1
If you have decent quality blueprints this will help out heaps.
Oh the-blueprints.com... awesome site
